"If by a "liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people — their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights and their civil liberties — someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "liberal." – President John F. Kennedy...................... Some people find me and that sentiment subversive. I'm here to set the record straight and offer the real typical liberal point of view. Some call it subversive, I call it patriotic.

Kenneth Poppe ponders the plight of the non-believer. He suggests they search for other "faiths" as a substitute such as political causes and science. I have a simpler conclusion; people are often moved into action when they feel so compelled whether they believe in God or not. There are certainly "true believers" in movements who act like religious zealots, I don't think it's fair to say this is a substitution for religious belief though.

On a couple of Mr. Poppe's other themes;

Creationism begins with an assumption and all observations are manipulated around that. Science begins with a theory and that theory changes when observations prove elements of the theory false. One requires faith, the other requires pragmatism. If we would teach creationism as science, then we must teach science as religion. It's an absurd idea.

Global warming is based on science, not faith. Carbon in our atmosphere isn't conducive to our survival. There's more of it in the air now than before. It only makes sense then, we should limit the additional carbon we put into the air now. This bickering as to who is right or wrong is really irrelevant.

I object to Mr. Poppe's assertion that a non belief in God translates into a an elevating of human importance in the universe. I can't speak for everyone who doesn't believe in a higher power, but in my case, I have no inclination to elevate human kind to a god like status. I'm reminded of our fallibility every day I open the news paper. I don't lie in bed at night wondering "if not God, then what or how?" I am o.k. in knowing I will never know everything, I am just not compelled to fill in the gaps with leaps of faith.

Mr. Poppe's behavior is due to a meme that's becoming very popular these days: "science can't be true if it contradicts my faith." It's not limited to global warming and evolution denial - you also see it at work in the anti-vaccination campaign. A big symptom of it is people dismissing the scientific consensus as the result of a "conspiracy." It leads to people shopping around for their own science, and embracing any two-bit hack who can write a book or a run a website that agrees with them. It's anti-rational, pre-enlightenment behavior, and it's killing us.

Both sides of the global warning debate use science to back up their views. To me it comes down to this; oil is finite, i don't really like sitting in traffic with a bunch of other fume spewing vehicles, let's find a better way.
