Blog Entry 191 of 191 From the mountains to 6th Avenue
Many Evergreeners commute. It's been described as a commuter community. Accurate. So there is an etiquette to commuting. The first rule: Leave early. Even if you depart for a 9 to five job at 6:30 a.m., you will not be alone. If you like being alone on the highway, go to Montana. The second rule: Leave early If you don't get off til 5 p.m., take a book on tape, because you will be sitting in traffic near Federal and 6th, and entertainment of any kind is helpful. There are polite drivers, like me, who let others sneak in, especially in merge lanes. I try. You probably do too. The one thing I have decided that will not happen to me is that I will not be mangled in a car wreck on 6th Avenue or I-70 in either direction. What do you do to keep this promise to yourself?

Evergreen performances toe tappin'

I have a friend who said she didn't like Cole Porter musicals. She wasn't very specific about the reason.

Yeah, it's not modern, but neither is Oklahoma or South Pacific or Annie Get Your Gun, all Broadway mainstays.

In the hand (and toe tapping feet) of the Evergreen Chorale, Porter's Anything Goes opening night performance Sept. 19 was a delightful revival that tells the story in song and dance of mismatched lovers and intentionally mistaken identities that take place on an ocean liner headed to England from New York in the 1930s.

The sparkle of curly-haired Meg Glatther as Bonnie and the self confidence of the leads Alissa and Gerry Tegeder, the show was sold out and for good reason.

Gary Muse, who played Moonface Martin, said after the show, "Could you tell we're having fun up there!"

Yes. And it's contagious.

Maybe that's why people continue to go to musicals in small towns and on Broadway.

According to program notes, Anything Goes first hit the stage in 1934 and was the fourth longest running musical of the thirties. "despite the impact of the Great Depression."

The show runs through Oct. 5. Visit www.evergreenchorale.org for ticket information.
