Four Mile goes the distance !!!
Contributed by: Judy Anderson on 10/17/2006

I am nominating Four Mile Family Resource Center for the best nonprofit organization in the Aurora area. I am on the board of directors and have proudly volunteered my time for about 2 years. Our current office location is in Glendale, however our service area includes Glendale, southeast Denver and Aurora. We serve approximately 9,000 people in this community.

Statistics show that this area is the most culturally diverse community in the state of Colorado. According to the Arapahoe County Library, there are 28 different languages spoken there. Everything from Russian to Spanish to various dialects of Arabic. Acording to the U.S. Census, virtually all of the students inthis area do not speak English well.

We are an organization with an experienced director and a diverse, involved board of directors. Here is a list of some of the programs that we currently offer or are planning to start in the near future:

1) Sponsor ESL (English as a Second Language) classes held at Ellis Elementary
2) Sponsor Cooking and Nutrition classes
3) We offer drama classes for refugee children helping them to improve their language skills and their self confidence
4) Sponsor a food donation program, pairing giving families with those in need
5)Provide after school tutoring for students grades K through 12
6) Provide transportation and translators for "Back to School" nights
7) Hold community meeting to assess the needs of the community
8) Survey landlords in the neighboring areas to assess their needs
9)Facilitate an advocacy desk at Ellis Elementary School providing assistance to any member of the community
10) Sponsor summer activities programs for kids of all ages
11) We are planning financial seminars to help adults with budgeting, banking, tax preperation, credit accounts etc.

Attached is a flyer for Family Resource Centers of Colorado. As you can see, Carmelo Anthony is one of our biggest supporters. He was helped by Family Resource Centers when he was growing up as an underprivileged your in Baltimore. He has never forgotten the valuable resources that were given to him, and now he wants to make sure that other young people get those same advantages.

We would love to received the $1,000 grant offered by The Hub. I can assure you as this group's treasurer that these monies would go directly to program funding and not to mangerial funding. We are excited about enlarging our tutoring program which has been so successful in the past. Students are able to stay on track and even get ahead in school. Please consider us for this tremendous gift.

Sincerely,

Judy Anderson
Executive Board Member
Treasurer
