Blog Entry 18 of 65 The Front Range Reader
Books, books and more books. In my spare time, I write book blogs/reviews for websites specifically devoted to books and readers. Although I have an advanced degree in Comparative Literature (specialty in Medieval Studies) I love to read all sorts of books from medieval to modern literature, from light reading to literary.

Hot romance with electric humor and fun movie references

The Playboy Boss's Chosen Bride by Emma Darcy
Harlequin Presents (Oct 2006)
ISBN: 0-373-12572-0

Published under the line Harlequin Presents (advertised as "seduction and passion guaranteed"), Australian writer Emma Darcy dazzles the reader with both escalating tension and all-out humorous pleasure.

The playboy boss of Signature Songs, Jack Devila always has a skinny blond on his arm. Merlina Rossi interviews as his assistant and from the very beginning, Jack tries to form her in his image. Spunky Merlina, a curvy brunette, is out to teach her boss the lesson of a lifetime.

In the workplace, Jack and Merlina spar and butt heads ---- the game is electric! Has Jack gone too far when he asks her to plan his grandfather's birthday surprise or will she teach him a lesson? What happens when the sparks fly outside of the workplace? But how can Jack know anything about stable relationships when his own family has provided such a poor example? Merlina comes from a strong Italian family and they have little interest in his money and all his fancy glitz. Merlina escaped her overprotective family when her job at Signature Sounds provided the independence she craved. Will she chose independence or reject Jack when he does not measure up to her heart's desire?

Wow, wow---terrific! This isn't the kind of title that normally attracts me but this book was so much fun that I only slowed down to read some of the funnier scenes to my husband.

The characters are all so lovable---especially Jack's grandfather, Byron! Merlina's traditional father is the perfect counterpoint to Byron. The references to movie culture such as Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon, Marilyn Monroe, and American Beauty make for much literary amusement. Movie buffs might find the most amusement to see what Emma Darcy has done with How to Murder Your Wife starring Jack Lemmon and Virna Lisi.

In The Playboy Boss's Chosen Bride, Emma Darcy has written some of the best passion scenes that I have read ever. The love scenes are as electric as the chemistry between the two sizzles, all without being offensive or crude. Any writer wanting a lesson on how to write passionate scenes for a female audience might learn a lot from Emma Darcy and this romance.

Even better, I was thoroughly delighted to read about a hero who is a curvy woman, especially after seeing all the anorexic-looking models in our culture. Unusual and refreshing!

This book may be short at 184 pages but it is a real treasure! It takes tremendous skill to write so well in a short novel and Emma Darcy is magnificent. This book is anything but small. The characters are well-developed. The plot is tight, compact and perfectly orchestrated. Not one word is wasted. Perfect!
