Blog Entry 21 of 65 The Front Range Reader
Books, books and more books. In my spare time, I write book blogs/reviews for websites specifically devoted to books and readers. Although I have an advanced degree in Comparative Literature (specialty in Medieval Studies) I love to read all sorts of books from medieval to modern literature, from light reading to literary.

Hot romance: Alpha Navy hero & ex-surfer
Contributed by: Merrimon Crawford   on 4/13/2007

Not for young readers: sexually explicit scenes

Stephanie Tyler's Coming Undone is the perfect spring fantasy romance read: a passion-filled romance between a take-charge Navy Seal and an independent but injured and ex-surfer scared to surf again. A fax digit error leads the characters to play stand-ins for each other's fantasies and by playing, they discover their real fantasies ---the romance of the heart. This romance is light, steamy and entertaining with just enough depth to make it better than than the typical romance in this subgenre but not too much to make it boring for its purpose. This romance will please anyone who is a fan of red-hot romance with strong men as heroes and dynamic heroines or any romance reader in need of good vacation read.

After reading a Woman's magazine article about revealing fantasies to one's man, Samantha decides she wants to spice up her drab relationship with Joe. The article suggests forgetting cozy fireside romance and turning the heat on from the inside. When Sam has trouble writing her fantasy, she turns to her friend Carly and they make a pact. Carly will write the fantasy, or at least give her a good start, and Sam will work on the list for the Charity event Carly must organize.

Carly writes down her steamiest fantasy and faxes the list to Sam --- or so she thinks. She goes to answer the door and a Navy SEAL in camouflage stands at her parents' door and asks why she is sending this type of inflammatory fax over the Navy's secure line and why attached to it is a list of all the proper and most prestigious families in the area! Even worse, her parents are in the other room. This is only the beginning of a series of funny situations that bring the characters together. Navy SEAL Jonathon "Hunt" Huntington wants to know how her fantasy ends.

Hunt's protects her honor before her parents questions and gets him in a deep mess. Carly's pleas motivate him to agree to play her boyfriend and attend her sister's wedding. Although she escapes the all too proper and boring date her mother arranged, she has not escaped Hunt. She isn't sure she wants to escape, except that in exchange, she agrees to teach him how to surf. Carly was an expert surfing competitor but since her last nearly fatal accident, she has retired. She has panic attacks every time she even sees the water! Can Hunt help Carly learn to let go both of her fear and to reveal the end of her fantasy? Can Hunt let go himself and reveal all that he has hidden inside his Alpha Male in charge role?

When Samantha reads her fantasy to her boyfriend, will he go along or will his desire for a proper family and wife in society overtake his feelings for her? When Hunt's brother, Ty, arrives on the scene, she must choose between the proper husband or the man who stirs her heart and fantasies. Unfortunately, Ty is not the settle-down type, and Sam must choose the real fantasy of her heart when he plans to take off on his motorcycle for Las Vegas.

Coming Undone is published by Harlequin Blaze, a line accurately advertised as "red-hot reads." The romance is steamy. Every moment and mere look of a character is filled with desire. Nevertheless, Tyler portrays the inner vulnerabilities of her characters and the zany situations cause life-changing transformations beyond a mere moment. Samantha's encounter with Ty, Hunt's brother, supplements the main plot line and adds depth and tension. To a non-Navy person like myself, some of the Navy details seemed unrealistic, but in questioning my husband who served in the Navy, I quickly discovered that these portrayals are indeed accurate and on target.

I won't create a spoiler but I can say that Stephanie Tyler takes a red-hot fantasy and weaves something much deeper into the characters' internal lives. The romance is more the real fantasy of the heart than the original faxed fantasy.
