Blog Entry 51 of 82 Baseball, football, the Grateful Dead,Jesus and me
Could be politics, religion, music, sports, family life or anything in-between and outside the lines. (I refuse to say "outside the box," even if my chosen line means exactly the same thing) Chronologically, I'm 40. The consensus among those who know me best puts me somewhere between 10 and 13 in terms of maturity. I love listening to Jimmy Buffett, the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers and all acts Country (except the Dixie Chicks who offended my long-held,closed-minded view of decent behavior) I have deep, strong beliefs in all things I believe in and sometimes in things I don't. I pride myself in my contradictory nature even though it is a sign of weakness to change one's mind. I have been known to waver more than John Kerry talking about national defense, though I remain steadfast in my beliefs. I am prepared to argue to the death on one issue and one issue alone; Dickey Betts should be allowed back in the Allman Brothers. On this, there is no compromise. I believe in compromise in all other areas so long as the compromise includes everything that I want or believe in. In all seriousness, I am a lucky man, blessed with a wonderful family and an uncanny ability to not care about anything if the situation requires such. I believe that minds are like parachutes in that they have been known to fail their user, albeit with a slightly lower fatality rate. So that's me, or at least that's kind of me. I mean, I felt that way right before I didn't.

Flotatin' in my bowl taking movies . . .

Colorful wordsmithing!

I don't know what a wordsmith is. I'm not even positive that I didn't just make that up. However, people are getting rich writing stuff like:

Wish I was an english muffin, 'bout to make the most out of a toaster.

The above brought to you by Paul Simon. Yes, that Paul Simon. You know, the guy who became famous and threw away his Art.

Popular music has given us so much joy . . . and confusion. Really, what did America mean when they said,

He flies the sky like an eagle in the eye of a hurricane that's abandoned.?

Forgive my sixties and seventies references. That's the music of my youth and my brothers. I grew up in the late 70s (I'm not bragging, just saying . . .although, many will argue that I have yet to grow up) and I came of age listening to my brothers' music from the sixites.

That's why I want to know if there's anywhere besides an acid trip that silver horses ran down moonbeams in your dark eyes? I don't know, ask Jack Bruce.

You might be waiting for the obligatory, "Why didn't he name his damn horse?" Sorry, that joke's been done a million times and at least Horse With No Name makes some sense. Think about it, you're in the desert, man! You got bigger problems than naming your horse. Besides, it felt good to be out of the rain.

I don't know about you, but I've never been in-a-gadda-da-vida. There's an interesting story behind that one. It involves a gallon of wine and a songwriter playing his newest tune, "In the Garden Eden" for a bandmate. Said bandmate wrote down what he heard. Hence, the famous song. (My old radio partner, Tom and I were once challenged as to how many beers we could slam during that song. We accepted the challenge. Problem was, we were hosting a live oldies show on Navy Radio at the time. We each finished six, and probably would have done more but we were only provided with a twelve pack. If I remember correctly, the rest of the show that night consisted of album sides. Again, I'm not bragging, just sayin')

Let's take a look at "The Weight" by the Band. Great stuff, but just a little confusing. According to Robbie Robertson (who oughtta know, he wrote it!) the song isn't as inherently Christian-spiritual as some might think. The Nazareth of the opening line actually refers to Nazareth, Pennsylvania, where the Martin Guitar Company is headquartered. Take what you like from the implication that there was "no room at the inn." Just need some place where I can lay my head. Hey mister can you tell me where a man might find a bed? He just grinned and shook my hand, no was all he said. Kind of New Testament? Decide for yourself, for as the late Rick Danko said, " The Weight means different things to different people on different days."

When it comes to understanding lyrics, I like Rober Hunter's take the best. Hunter wrote the lyrics to many of the Grateful Dead's songs. He's refused to ever "explain" what the words mean because in his mind, "15,000 people can hear the same song and there can be 15,000 different meanings each time."

Somebody ask Billy Joel; Just what is a real estate novelist? Actually, according to Brent Mann, a music writer, Joel has explained. Apparently, "Paul" from "Piano Man" is a realtor whom Joel once knew. "Paul" always talked about his "not quite-finished" novel.

Did Bob Dylan really turn the Beatles on to pot? Was He Said/She Said based on a conversation Paul and John had with Peter Fonda? Who was Elizabeth Reed that the Allman Brothers "memorialized?" Is there really a Marshall Tucker? Do you want to hit the guy who asked, "Which one's Leonard?" at the Skynyrd show?

Music leaves so much to be discussed and argued. Next time, we'll address " Gypsies, Chimpanzees," the Cher song that I mis-heard as a kid. What were those gypsies doing with chimps, anyway?

Let us not forget the line in The Beatles' "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" in which "the girl with colitis goes by!"

I, too, want to hit the guy who asks "Which one's Leonard?" And the guy who asks "Which one's Jethro?"
