It is all opinion!
Pedantic responses to an Other's limited view. Be reasonable, see it my way.

If you wonder why old guys end up on the street, it's in part because youth eschews experience for greed. I recall a West Virginia governor who was found driving a taxi in Indiana.
"Overqualified" is a convenient label for experienced elders seeking jobs. The standard response of Human Resources personnel is to ignore experience because of expectations of salary expense--good work ethic costs too much. Although equal opportunity statements are common, most applications still ask for birth dates, or have other age indications. A complete biograph indicating past performance will tip the scales as imagined too costly for a particular need.
Two things come to mind: the result of ignoring an established work ethic will depress the employer's 'bottom line' (because the best employees create the best results); and failure of HR to recognize and employ (proven) superior workers will eventually influence their own opportunities.
Most elders who need funds just to survive are ignored as potentially productive. They are "handicapped" by having survived.
The failure of our society to recognize the need to sustain its elders must eventually erode the connection to what has been best of the past.

Very True! I have a friend who was laid off as a bookeeper and it took a facelift !!!! and a move to another state and 4 years - for him to find another job. He is 60. But now looks 55. He is an excellent employee and should not have had to go to that extreme to find work!
