Myriad Sundries
I've been an observer of life for over 50 years. Teaching has given me many moments to ponder. Music helps it all make sense. As my title says, myriad sundries - 10,000 little things. Enjoy my moments as I have. My blogs include everything and anything.

Actually, it is 18 days of spring break. Why so many days?
I work in a year-round school. I still put in 185 days of contact with kids - same as any other elementary teacher in Colorado.
My first day of the school year is usually a few days after Independence Day, then 9 weeks on and then about 3-4 weeks off. Then, 9 weeks on and another 3-4 weeks off. Not much of a summer break, but all of June is plenty for me. I've done this for 12 years now. I live in Arvada, but drive to Highlands Ranch to teach at Coyote Creek Elementary (
http://schools.dcsdk12.org/education/staff/staff.php?sectiondetailid=92800
). Many DougCo schools still do this. But it is about to end for me.
My school is going to a more traditional calendar next year. Why? Enrollment is going down. Do I mind? Nope. They say that teachers' three favorite things are June, July, and August. So, I get my summers back, but give up long breaks during the school year. So why am I saying that 3 weeks is too long?
Because it is really hard to go back after being off so long. I forget students' names. I forget where to park. My ID card is always missing and it is hard to get up early (5:15 a.m.) again. Oh, well, my spring break is just beginning, so I better get busy forgetting.

Having those breaks is one thing I miss about being a student, and one reason why teaching sometimes sounds like an attractive option. Glad to have you blogging in Arvada, John.

What will you do with all of that time off in the summer?
