Gladys Mercier, Arvada.
I like living in Arvada.I am a member of Trinity Baptist Church and have many good friends there.I lived in the same house in Denver until I married, so as you can see, I am a native. My husband and I adopted 2 Korean sons who are now adults, 1 is a State Patrol Sgt., the other is an upholsterer. My husband died Sept.1st,2005. My family is a real blessing to me.I will probably write most about them, especially my great grandchildren (3)

I met my friend
Alyce
for lunch Saturday in Wiggins, Colorado. Alyce and I have been friends since we were about 10 years old when her family moved in by mine. That was 66 years ago! We became fast friends right away, walking to Swansea school together and then going on to Cole Jr. High.
Alyce was more outgoing than me and she attracted boys like crazy, so I benefited from that, too. Not to mention that she had beautiful blond hair and was always laughing.
She would come over to my house a lot when we were kids and my mother would get so exasperated with her and tell her to go home. But she would be back within a half hour.
As we grew older we went roller skating a lot, at Derby rink and also at Skateland and Mammoth Gardens. What fun we had. We were so carefree. We thought nothing of riding the bus home late at night. We always felt safe back then.
We went trick-or-treating on Halloween and had bonfire parties in her backyard.
We went to Sunday school together, double dated and played games with the neighborhood kids.
Finally we had to grow up. I got married and stayed in Denver. Alyce married a farmer in Fort Morgan and has lived there and in Orchard, Colorado, for years, loving the farm life. My boys loved to go there when they were kids, they could drive the truck around the farm with Alyce's kids! A real treat for them and something they could never do in the city. They told me that one of them would steer the truck, another would get on the floor and push the gas pedal and one the brakes. Good thing I didn't know that until years later.
Alyce and I have kept in touch all these years, but it has been more difficult lately to see each other with all the family responsibilities. I care for my disabled niece and her husband is now disabled.
When we got the chance to get together on Saturday, we were happy. I drove to Wiggins to meet her. What a great time we had talking about our childhoods and friends and all the fun things we did. I was reminded again how much she has meant to me, a true friend.
I cherish her and all my friends here. I am thankful for all of you.

What a fine tribute to enduring friendships, Gladys. I have some women friends I met in sixth grade in Little Rock. In fact, one of them is in Colorado Springs this week on business and we are having dinner together tonight. Your blog reminds me how special these connections are.

I like the part about the kids driving the truck around the farm! These days parents don't let their kids even play soccer unattended!

"Make new friends but keep the old/One is silver and the other gold." You made me remember the old Girl Scout song.

People often tell me that I am too nostalgic since I love to recall things the way you do. Personally, I think that history is one of the greatest gifts of aging. Where others can only read about places and times, we aged ones actually lived it. No historical account can ever match that, and no historical account can ever match the pleasure of sharing it with friends. Thank you for sharing.
