I like living in Arvada.I am a member of Trinity Baptist Church and have many good friends there.I lived in the same house in Denver until I married, so as you can see, I am a native. My husband and I adopted 2 Korean sons who are now adults, 1 is a State Patrol Sgt., the other is an upholsterer. My husband died Sept.1st,2005. My family is a real blessing to me.I will probably write most about them, especially my great grandchildren (3)

Auntie Mame? No, Aunt Eva
Contributed by: Gladys Mercier   on 6/27/2007

When I was a kid, my Aunt Eva and her husband Lou Ziggy lived in Central City.
I can still see the little white house up on the side of the hill. We had to take a very narrow, winding road to get there. Eva and Lou had three children.

One day, my aunt decided to make a drastic change in her life. She ran off with the mailman! No, I am not kidding.

Uncle Lou stayed there in that same white house and raised the children while Aunt Eva went off to California to a new life.

In 1946, one of their boys, my cousin, Bobbie Ziggy was driving on the road near Rollinsville with his girlfriend in the front seat with him. A boxcar had broken loose from a train way up the mountain and just as they crossed the tracks, the boxcar hit their car. His girlfriend survived but Bobbie was killed.

I will never forget his funeral in the small cemetary up the winding hill from Central City. It was winter and was very cold. Bobbie had served in the navy and had a full millitary burial. The wind howled throughout the service, carrying the sound of taps through the tree tops. It was such a forlorn sound and such a sad day for all of us to lose such a young family member in such a tragic accident.

We were not able to locate his mother, my Aunt Eva, in time for the funeral. She had started another life and had forgotten all about this first family.

I have always wondered how she could have been so cold-hearted, so different from her sister, my mother, who struggled and worked so hard to raise us. Mom would never have deserted us.

My Aunt Eva is gone, Uncle Lou is gone, Bobbie is gone and the little white house is gone from the hill.
I miss the old Central City.

I remember that cemetery in Central City and going up there before the casinos. It was so quiet and peaceful. It was like being able to step back in time. I miss the old Central City too. I love that your share your history with us and I love the great "Brownie" shots you upload. I hope you have forgiven your aunt by now, and that she has been able to forgive herself.

Gladys, that is such a sad story! It is hard to know why people do the things they do. Thank you for writing about this.
