I like living in Arvada.I am a member of Trinity Baptist Church and have many good friends there.I lived in the same house in Denver until I married, so as you can see, I am a native. My husband and I adopted 2 Korean sons who are now adults, 1 is a State Patrol Sgt., the other is an upholsterer. My husband died Sept.1st,2005. My family is a real blessing to me.I will probably write most about them, especially my great grandchildren (3)

Beauty when you least expect it

On Mother's Day not too long ago, my son Don and I found ourselves footloose and fancy free. Ha! That is an old one. I had been staying at his home near Walsenburg while he and Janet went to New Orleans to visit Liz and Tiana.
Janet could not tear herself away from little Tiana, so Don came home alone.
I think he came home so that he would be there for me on Mother's Day.
He took me to lunch at Alys's Fireside Cafe in Walsenburg, a great place to eat.
Alys is a transplanted New Yorker and really enjoys the slow pace of life in a small town.

After lunch, Don asked me if there was anything that I would like to do.
There is always something I would like to do. I had passed a sign on I-25 many times and was really curious to see what was on that road. The sign said " "Graneros Road." Could we go take a look? Don was surprised that I had not been there before, so we drove down the highway toward Trinidad and turned off on that road.

It didn't look like much, just flat prairie with lots of sage brush. At the end of the road, Don told me to get out of the car and walk just a few steps and I was looking down into a very pretty place, "Graneros Gulch." It isa little way off the road and is not advertised, so I doubt if many people know it is there.
It is a startling sight to see when you are looking at flat ground and suddenly there is this beautiful gulch.

I enjoyed that Mother's Day with Don.

The word "Gulch" evokes anything but beauty. It's like "hips". Well, mine, anyway. But never you mind. I am glad you had a wonderful time! Thanks for sharing it.

Sometimes you have to step just a few feet off the beaten path to encounter wonderful things.

Gladys, the beautiful surprise might have been down Graneros Road but the appreciation for such a beautiful surprise is in the person. You.

My Mom is in the middle stages of Alzheimer's. Sometimes it hurts so bad when I think that all I have are memories of Mom. Your writing helps me to realize that sometimes, memories are the best of things. Thanks, Gladys.
