My husband died Sept.1st,2005. My family is a real blessing to me.I will probably write most about them, especially my great grandchildren (3)

A hair-raising trip to Longs Peak
Contributed by: Gladys Mercier   on 7/31/2007

Stan Dyer's interesting story about Estes Park brought back so many memories. Maybe I should name my blogs "memories."

Bob and I and our boys spent a lot of time in and around the town when the kids were growing up.

We had found some cabins just on the other side of the town where we could rent for not too much money and they were so pleasant, Machin's Cabins if I remember right. All of the cabins were decorated with a different western theme.
We could walk out the front door and hike in the beautiful woods. We even took our Christmas tree and all the trimmings there one Christmas in about 1964. That was one of our favorite Christmases.

Bob decided that he wanted to climb Longs Peak. I was a little leary of that, but he made it all the way to the top and, of course, that only made him want to do it again. He described the scenery from the top with a sense of wonder at what God had created.

In 1975, he convinced our son Ron to make the trip on horseback with him. There were several other people going, too. The guide told them to be ready early the next morning so they could get back down before the afternoon storms that always build up, so they left early but not quite early enough. A lightning storm hit while they were on the peak. The guide told them to lie down as flat as they could on the ground while the lightning flashed around them. Bob looked over at Ron to see his hair standing straight up in the air from the electricity. They both could feel the electric current in the ground under them and were very relieved when the storm was over and they were on the way down.

Bob said it was easier on his knees to climb than to go on horseback. One woman got off her horse and fell flat on the ground, she was so stiff from the ride.

Bob and Ron both enjoyed the day even with all the hair-raising events.

Stan tells about how much Estes Park has grown and changed. I am thankful I still have memories.

If my hair stood up on end I'm not sure I would look at the adventure as enjoyable.....LOL. Great story and thanks for sharing it.

The part that really amazed me was that Bob was able to convince your son to get up early. As always, a great story.

Oh, Estes has grown up, but you can still find a taste of what it was like if you look closely. The tram from the 50's is still there, as are all the chipmunks ready to eat peanuts at the top. As time passes, the city will keep encroaching on the mountains, but it will never encroach on our memories.
