Blog Entry 89 of 119 Gladys Mercier, Arvada.
I like living in Arvada.I am a member of Trinity Baptist Church and have many good friends there.I lived in the same house in Denver until I married, so as you can see, I am a native. My husband and I adopted 2 Korean sons who are now adults, 1 is a State Patrol Sgt., the other is an upholsterer. My husband died Sept.1st,2005. My family is a real blessing to me.I will probably write most about them, especially my great grandchildren (3)

Ewww, I can't eat that!

I see where Jefferson County is making the school lunches more healthy for the kids. I hope the kids will eat the food that is good for them. In my experience working in food service, most of it ends up in the trash along with the eating utensils.

I first worked at Highlands Ranch High School in 1986 until 2000. I loved working there. I could not believe what good food we were able to offer. There was a salad bar that would make Sooper Salad jealous. We had a hamburger and hot dog bar with icees. I served the main hot meal of the day, which most kids lined up for mostly because they got the most food for the money.

I loved those high school kids but had to quit when we moved to Westminster.
It was a real shock to go to work in the food service in a small school off of Federal where most of the kids were low income and got lower-priced lunches.
They also got lower-quality lunches. We had hamburgers swimming in grease, fried chicken patty sandwiches that were dry as a bone by the time they were reheated more than once, fried chicken nuggets, hot dogs, pizza or tacos. Once in a while when the kids got mashed potatoes, they were happy, but I found that some of them were not familiar with gravy. One little boy asked me not to put "chocolate sauce" on his potatoes.

The salad we served came in a bag and turned brown by the time lunch was ready. Rarely were they given fresh fruit, a half an orange occasionally.
I thought back to the salad bar at Highlands Ranch where there were fresh strawberries, watermelon, cantaloupe and lots of good things. In Adams County, sometimes a child would forget his money and was given some cheese and crackers to eat for lunch while we threw out the food we had left. That bothered me a lot.

This was not the fault of the lunchroom ladies who did all they could with the food they were given and had to follow orders. Feeding children is a challenge. They will usually only eat what they like and the rest of it ends up in the waste basket. I hope Jeffco succeeds in getting the kids better, more healthy and appetizing food.

School cuisine is a hot topic these days. Over processed foods filled with all sorts of preservatives, artificial flavors, dyes and worse seem to be standard fare. Burgers and pizza can be wholesome. Chips, too, and ice cream. It's a matter of managing brands according to processing methods. Healthy, wholesome prep and processing should make institutional food companies bid winners, not just price.

My kids are 16,13,9 and 2 and the three that eat lunch at school in CCSD mostly eat the junk anyway. It's too bad that kind of food is offered at all while so much ends up in the trash. At about $50/month per child for school lunches it sure seems like a waste. Michelina's frozen entees at $1 each are a much better deal and healthier option that they all seem to like!

It's a wonder why we have so much childhood obesity. Good story Gladys, thank you.

My grandma was a "lunch lady" for 21 years for Jefferson County Schools. She retired in the early 80's. Back then they made everything fresh at each school. She even taught me how to make that famous Salisbury Steak and the noodles! Then the school district wanted to make the food services more cost effective so the majority of the food was prepared in a central location and ship it out. Now days in the schools my kids can get Subway, Dominos Pizza or other fast food. I don’t know how they can say the food is better tasting, more nutritious or less fattening.

I actually liked the food at my school's cafeteria. And I knew some of the lunch ladies because we went to the same church. My favorite lunch was corndog and fries. I am not sure how much lunches cost these days, but I think we ought to make them free for all.
