Thanksgiving from the heart
Contributed by: Gladys Mercier   on 11/11/2007

Thanksgiving dinner is not such a big deal at my house now. I am still very thankful for all that God has given me, but I am also thankful that I do not have to cook a big turkey with all the trimmings.

The last 2 years, I have bought the dinner already cooked from King Soopers and it was very good, but still the hardest part is cleaning up. I do not enjoy getting the turkey meat all cut off the bone and put away.

My son Ron offered to take us out this year but I am afraid that Patty would have a hard time waiting in a crowded restaurant. Patty is my disabled niece that I care for.

I decide to buy 2 or 3 rotisserie chickens from King Soopers, depending on who is coming. That sounds so easy!

For many years, my brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Virginia had our whole family for Thanksgiving dinner and I have to tell you that was a lot of hard work for them since there was more than 40 of us by the time we all married and had kids.

They had a big house and would put boards on their ping pong table and pool table to fit us all in. Sometimes the kids would still have to eat at a separate table. It was always fun to be together. Virginia is a wonderful cook and we would all bring something to the dinner.

The Simpsons have always been an argumentive bunch, friendly most of the time. The brothers would always have to go out and have a race down the street to see whether Fords or Chevys were faster.

The most fun was when the ping pong table was cleared off so we could play Round Robin. Everyone would get around the table, one would pick up the paddle, hit the ball, lay the paddle down and move on. The next person would do the same. If one missed, they were out of the game, so there was fewer and fewer at the table. When we got down to 3 or 4, we were running like crazy to get to the other end and pick up the ping pong paddle but when it was down to just 2, the remaining 2 would have to pick up the paddle, hit the ball, lay down the paddle, turn around in a circle, pick up the paddle and hit the ball!

I miss those days. It seemed like after my mother died, we didn't get together like we used to. Some had moved to other states and some of us had families of our own that we needed to be with.

I think Harold and Virginia were great to do all of that work so we could be together. I will never forget those times.

Great story and wonderful photos Gladys. We always joke about the many days of preparation that go into a meal that is usually over with in an hour or less. Then there is the cleanup, but leftovers..........oh how my family loves that. My mother in law makes the best stuffing, and I'm getting pretty good at duplicating her decadent side dishes. Boy, am I getting hungry. Happy Thanksgiving! (Love your new pic by the way)

Wonderful story, Gladys. I really don't like cutting all the meat from the turkey, either. Somehow, this job has fallen to me. Every year, I try to talk the wife into going out, only to hear, "But my family looks forward to coming over!" That's why I want to go out! They could still come over! I'll leave the door unlocked! By the way, I didn't get to the crabs in time, had to toss out 2 dozen! Got busy. However, I do have some pasturized meat that lasts longer. I will still get you your crabcakes before I leave for Japan! Then, I'll send you photos of the King Crabs we'll have there!

Many cultures since the beginning of recorded history have celebrated some type of Thanksgiving. It gives us time to reflect about our lives while we enjoy the company of family, friends and neighbors. Nowadays, I "adopt" a turkey and eat tofurkey instead, but I still enjoy the holiday to the fullest. It's not about the meal so much as it is about the timeless tradition of family.
