Blog Entry 94 of 119 Gladys Mercier, Arvada.
I like living in Arvada.I am a member of Trinity Baptist Church and have many good friends there.I lived in the same house in Denver until I married, so as you can see, I am a native. My husband and I adopted 2 Korean sons who are now adults, 1 is a State Patrol Sgt., the other is an upholsterer. My husband died Sept.1st,2005. My family is a real blessing to me.I will probably write most about them, especially my great grandchildren (3)

Memories are made of this?

I read a story in the Rocky Mountain News this morning about surgeons who had operated on the wrong side of the head in three different cases. Makes you wonder about going to the hospital, doesn't it?

When I was about 7 years old, there was a diptheria epidemic and after a throat culture given to me at school, the doctor said I was a diptheria carrier. That meant I had to be isolated from my family, so I had to go to the hospital.
I was not the least bit sick. I was very shy when I was little and was scared to talk to anyone at the hospital.

One crabby nurse told me to go out and play with the other kids, but I couldn't bring myself to go join them, so I sat on the back steps of the hospital until almost dark, when the nurse came bursting through that back door to look for me. She was very relieved when she saw me sitting there and so was I. I probably would have sat there all night.

It was terrible to be so shy. The girl in the room with me was slated for knee surgery one morning. The interns came into our room and started to load me on the gurney to be operated on. I was so scared that I could not say anything, but was saved when a nurse stuck her head in and told them they had the wrong patient. I probably would have let them operate on my knee!
Be thankful if you are outgoing and sociable. Help your kids to know that they need to speak out and be heard at times.

My mother could not visit me because I was contagious, but she did come to the playground fence to see me. I was so glad to see her. My older brother Louie was also brought to the hospital a couple days later as a "carrier," but that did not help me much. He was angry with me since it was "all my fault" that he had to be there!!

Thankfully, I did not get diptheria and was soon able to go home, but I never forgot that hospital visit!

I was shy when I was a little kid too. Sometimes I think it just takes some of us longer than others to 'grow into our skins', if you will. Great story! And, as usual, great photos!

I worry more about doctors and hospitals than I do about little girls being shy. I find it difficult to believe that trained professionals could be so remiss as to operate on the wrong patients or the wrong body parts, but I know it happens all the time.

Katherine, that is probably true. It is easier to write about stuff than to talk about it.

Gladys, I was also very shy growing up, but had 3 brothers who always watched out for me. I played a lot of different sports, and became pretty outgoing because of all the encouragement I got. I've heard that a lot of shy people become writers. What do you think?

karin, I don't remember why I was standing on a chair. Maybe so my 6 brothers could not get in front of me?

Hi, Gladys. This is such a fun story. I was very shy up until my first day of high school, when I forced myself to talk to at least one new person. My mission was to be more outgoing, and I'm very glad for it. There is something to be said for being able to make sure you are heard ...

Since I moved around a lot when I was young and always had to make new friends, I was pretty outgoing and sociable. Although in college, I got teased for wanting to be the center of attention all the time. They even made me a certificate with that label. Ha!
