Blog Entry 101 of 126 Gladys Mercier, Arvada.
I like living in Arvada.I am a member of Trinity Baptist Church and have many good friends there.I lived in the same house in Denver until I married, so as you can see, I am a native. My husband and I adopted 2 Korean sons who are now adults, 1 is a State Patrol Sgt., the other is an upholsterer. My husband died Sept.1st,2005. My family is a real blessing to me.I will probably write most about them, especially my great grandchildren (3)

Huggin' and a chalking?
Contributed by: Gladys Mercier   on 1/31/2008

Is anyone else old enough to remember this song besides me? The fellers' girl was so chubby that he had to mark his way around her with chalk so he wouldn't miss anything? Yeah, it is a nutty song but we thought it was cute.
A hug can do wonders when you really need one.
I have had a hard 2 weeks.

One of Bobs' family members tried to commit suicide and came very close to succeeding so things have been a blur of hospital visits, taking clothing and neccesities to her, trying to figure out how she could have gotten so down without any of us knowing it. Now she is being held on a mental health hold for quite a long time and is REALLY depressed about that.

People who commit suicide or try to, do not realize how hard it is on the ones who care for them. Life can be hard, but things can always get better. If she had just talked to someone.

I was feeling really bad myself through all of this until the Girl Sout came.
I had told Ron that I was not going to buy Girl Scout cookies this year, at almost $4.00 a box ...until this nice Girl Scout came to my door. She was so sweet, telling me how much she liked the lemon cookies. Okay, so I bought 3 boxes.
After paying her, she wrapped her arms around me in a big hug! I was touched by this, she was a stranger to me. She was a young teen and I an older woman.I wish I had gotten her name but I will always remember the hug. She really brightened things up for me.

I am sure we will love the lemon cookies.

Gladys, the pain of losing a loved one who takes their own life is incredibly painful. I know firsthand. Hugs to you and your family! The importance of a hug or simply a smile can make all the difference in the world, and I have learned to not be stingy with either.

Your stories are your hugs. We all feel hugged after reading them. Heartfelt hugs are also an excellent suicide prevention measure. I just wish more people would take advantage of this communication opportunity and share more hugs. It helps to build a stronger community.

I have learned to appreciate hugs. A friend of mine says everyone should give/get three a day, but I'm not sure I appreciate them that much. But, in your circumstances, a hug was definitely needed.

Gladys, no surprise you'd find comfort and meaning in the hug of a little Girl Scout during this very hard time for your family. About suicide--no, people that deep in despair, pain and mental instability probably lose the capability to consider how their actions will affect others. They seek an end to the agony without realizing, perhaps, the agony will live on in the lives of those they love. Very, very hard.

Sometimes people get very confused about life and don't ask for help.

Sorry to hear that Gladys... I know how tough it can be..I had a child..(won't say who) who was on a 'hold' a few years ago... not for suicide.. but still tough.. on them and us. In our case, everything turned out fine.. it was precautionary. But yes, it's very difficult to visit the mental health ward. I hope she'll be okay...
