Blog Entry 104 of 119 Gladys Mercier, Arvada.
I like living in Arvada.I am a member of Trinity Baptist Church and have many good friends there.I lived in the same house in Denver until I married, so as you can see, I am a native. My husband and I adopted 2 Korean sons who are now adults, 1 is a State Patrol Sgt., the other is an upholsterer. My husband died Sept.1st,2005. My family is a real blessing to me.I will probably write most about them, especially my great grandchildren (3)

The eye of the needle
Contributed by: Gladys Mercier   on 2/29/2008

Bob was in the Air Force and had been recently sent to Lowry Air Base from Texas when I met him. He was given a choice of 2 places to transfer to. His mother had had a cleaning lady when Bob was little, and she talked to him about all the " cowboys and indians" in Colorado, so he chose Colorado.

He was from northern Indiana, so he was fascinated with the mountains and couldn't get enough of them. We have been all over the Colorado mountains, but one of the most beautiful drives was over the old Corona Pass. The road was terrible, bumpy and full of ruts. Talk about rock and roll! We always had an old car, so we didn't worry about damaging it.

The scenery up there was worth all of the hard driving. Yankee Doodle Lake was so pretty. We heard that a couple small planes have crashed in it and are still there.

Going on over the pass, you could see the remains of the train depot that was in use before the Moffat Tunnel was built.Another beautiful lake was a short hike down from the top. There was a waterfall flowing down the mountainside with all colors of wild flowers growing in it.It was incredible, but so was the beauty all around us. We could see Rocky Mountain sheep high up on the hillsides.

The drive was kind of scary to me, but Bob loved it. At one place, we had to drive on the old railroad trestle out over thin air and soon came to a huge rock in the road with a hole carved in it to drive through. I understand that it is now called the eye of the needle and has since caved in, or a rockslide has made it impassable.

We were disappointed when the road was closed, but by then we had better cars and would not have driven on that bumpy road.

I am sorry that people now cannot go up there and enjoy the beauty of Corona Pass like we did.

Fascinating, Gladys. I'd love to have a look at that site now. I love your personal, historical stories. And...did I hear a rumor you are adopting some people? How do I submit my application?
