I like living in Arvada.I am a member of Trinity Baptist Church and have many good friends there.I lived in the same house in Denver until I married, so as you can see, I am a native. My husband and I adopted 2 Korean sons who are now adults, 1 is a State Patrol Sgt., the other is an upholsterer. My husband died Sept.1st,2005. My family is a real blessing to me.I will probably write most about them, especially my great grandchildren (3)

Memories, and Making Memories
Contributed by: Gladys Mercier   on 4/4/2008

My son Ron and I are planning a trip to Carmel and Monterey, California in June. This was Bob's and my favorite place when we had a few days off from work. Way before we could afford it. we would drive our van and sleep on the beach. Try to sleep that is, since the soldiers from Fort Ord liked to party there all night.
The beautiful scenery was worth it though.
We had some hair-raising experiences on our driving trips. One time, we were going through Utah and decided to pull off the road for a minute to get some soda from the car trunk. As I was about to open my car door, we heard a loud voice behind us and looked around to see a policeman with a megaphone, loudly telling us to stay in the car. Over and over he boomed this and as we sat there, a herd of wild horses came running right by my side of the car. I probably would have been killed if that policeman had not been there. We had not seen or heard the horses.
We had a favorite restaurant on Fishermans Wharf in Monterey. It was run by a family from India if I remember right. The owner, Mr. Sabu Shake would greet everyone at the door as they stopped to read the posted menu and he would hand out either a glass of wine or a cup of clam chowder. Of course then we felt obligated to go in and eat there. After the first time though, we did not need any incentive, the food was wonderful. His sons would go out each day in their fishing boat and bring back the fresh fish.
Bob and I both liked John Steinbeck's books about Cannery Row and enjoyed
visiting the places he wrote about.
We will visit Fishermans Wharf, Cannery Row, The 17 Mile Drive, Point Lobos and the beautiful Carmel beach and town.
I do hope Sabu Shake is still there. Wish Bob could go too.

IIRC, my dad met Clint Eastwood in Carmel. He said he was a very nice man. Have a safe trip!

A Hub group adventure would be something, eh? I'm not sure how functional we'd be, but oh, the stories! And I nominate Gladys for the storytelling......

I'd be envious, but that'd be sinful. Someday we oughta have a Hub group adventure.

Steinbeck has always been one of my favorites. One time, when I was in college, a girlfriend and I took a road trip to California. We could not afford motels, so we just stopped by the side of the road and slept in the car at rest areas. I guess I wasn't paying too much attention to the news. The Hillside Strangler was running rampant at the time and our activity was actually very dangerous. We had no trouble and it was a wonderful trip. Wanna see the pictures?
