I like living in Arvada.I am a member of Trinity Baptist Church and have many good friends there.I lived in the same house in Denver until I married, so as you can see, I am a native. My husband and I adopted 2 Korean sons who are now adults, 1 is a State Patrol Sgt., the other is an upholsterer. My husband died Sept.1st,2005. My family is a real blessing to me.I will probably write most about them, especially my great grandchildren (3)

Music to my ears
Contributed by: Gladys Mercier   on 4/14/2008

I picked up a copy of Prime time for Seniors the other day and was surprised and pleased to see an article by one of my favorite writers, Stan Dyer.

The article was about how music has influenced our lives and how some songs can bring back so many memories. That is certainly true for me.

Bob liked western music as opposed to what is called country music now and I also liked it. Eddy Arnold, Jim Reeves, Johnny Cash, there was some good music. Bob played the guitar and had a nice voice, so we did a lot of singing at our house.

We also loved Wayne Newton and collected his albums. I always make sure to see his show if I am in Las Vegas. He is one of the best.

When we first were married, Bob had a stack of records that he had brought back with him from overseas when he was in the Air Force. He really treasured those records and kept them stacked on top of a book case. One day when I was dusting, I tried to lift them down but dropped them instead, breaking several. He was not happy but didn't divorce me!

I have some sheet music from the '40s and '50s that I could never part with, they were such favorites of mine. One day, my boyfriend at that time wrote something by the title of each one, such as on I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now? he wrote "when may I?" Cute, funny things that bring a smile to me. I'll bet none of you remember that song or movie. I loved it.

I have to be careful now not to listen to too many songs that remind me of Bob. I cry easily and I don't need to cry anymore.

My son Ron tells me he is glad he grew up in a home with lots of music. He loves all kinds and he and Don both make CDs for me with my favorite songs.

I have always loved the song My Hero. I think it is from the operetta The Chocolate Soldier. We had it sung at our wedding in 1953. Come, come, come be my true love, come, come, come be my own. Beautiful song.

Hi, Gladys - Love your story. Music triggers so much. I still tear up when I hear the Commadores sing "Still"

My daughter in law has a wonderful voice and sings to my grandbabies all the time. What a gift that is!

Gladys, this is great as usual and it should be in print. I'm not being printed anymore either. Maybe I'll have to commit a crime so I will show up in the Police Blotter. :-) p.s. Hi Bill!! Hope things are well.

Bill, yes that was the show I saw at DCPA too. Are you home? I have been hoping to hear from you. Keep in touch.

Hi Gladys! Maybe it was "Always, Patsy Cline"? My wife and I saw it at the DCPA a few years back. BIG Patsy fans. I also met and interviewed Wayne Newton when I was working in Navy Broadcasting. He came to Deigo Garcia in the Indian Ocean on a USO tour in 1988. Great guy. Loved the show, too. Except when someone yelled "Danke Shoen" (sp?) he said, "Oh, s*#%." Didn't sing it for us. Oh well!

I tried to comment here a couple of days ago but YourHub had issues. I got thrown off twice! What a mess. Anyway, Patsy is one of our faves, as well as Lacy J. Dalton. I especially like "God bless the boys who make the noise on 16th Avenue."

Gladys, I see the same trend affecting the print version of YourHub.com. Local news seems to make print most often rather than column-ish stuff and personal stories. I do love reading your great stories here! You look cute with Wayne.

Yes Bill, it looks like the hub will just be a continuation of the newspaper. I did like reading the blogs.
