Blog Entry 116 of 126 Gladys Mercier, Arvada.
I like living in Arvada.I am a member of Trinity Baptist Church and have many good friends there.I lived in the same house in Denver until I married, so as you can see, I am a native. My husband and I adopted 2 Korean sons who are now adults, 1 is a State Patrol Sgt., the other is an upholsterer. My husband died Sept.1st,2005. My family is a real blessing to me.I will probably write most about them, especially my great grandchildren (3)

Swansea School
Contributed by: Gladys Mercier   on 5/26/2008

Gary Massaro wrote an article in the Rocky about Swansea school that made me feel sad. It seems that the Swansea nieghborhood has become very poor. When I was growing up there, I guess we were poor, but I never realized it. Everyone in the neighborhood seemed to be living about the same as I was. None of us were going hungry.

Gary mentioned that 100% of the students at Swansea qualify for the free breakfast and lunch program. I don't remember that there was a lunchroom when I was a student there, but then again, it was many years ago and the school was still in the old building.

I thought the inside of the school was beautiful with its wide staircase leading to the second floor and all of the woodwork and stair railings. Sometimes I would be chosen as a stairway monitor and I could stand there and yell at the kids not to run down the stairs. Do you think any of them listened to me? Ha. The boys were the worst ( naturally). They had to take the stairs 3 at a time or slide down the railings.
It seems that the Colorado Vencentian Volunteers are a group of young college graduates that tutor kids who need help the most. and have been tutoring at Swansea. I admire them for what they do. These kids are our future and I hope a lot of them grow up to stay in Swansea when they become successful.
It was a great neighborhood to grow up in. I wish the best for the kids at the school.

One of the volunteers, Bethany Musser, said, "Society is only as strong as its weakest portion." Thanks to her and the others for helping the kids at Swansea.

Awesome, Gladys. Your stroy brought back memories of my old junior high building. You could move the walls (this was before movable partitions) The first floor was too cold, the third floor too hot. Now it is condos, I believe.

Very nice story! I attended Alcott Elem School on 41st and Tennyson St in Denver in the mid 60's. It was being torn down around '75 or '76 and someone torched it. It's a park now. Then I went to Doull in Southwest Denver. Once when we were visiting Denver and I took my kids to Doull and let them play on the playground. That was cool seeing them playing on the same stuff I played on as a kid :o)

How sweet to remember your old school. I went to several schools in my elementary years, so I can't claim any one as mine.

Gladys, I began my life living in a housing project. No one told me we were poor, and, thus, I never knew until I grew older. Nonetheless, those were some of the most content, happy years of my life. Money does not buy happiness, but a community that works together, helps each other and takes care of its people helps to build happiness. I am the person I am today partly becaus of my humble upbringing.
