More Coprophagy

Dear Dog Guy,

I read your article in YOURHUB.com on 2-21-08 about the poop eating pup and I hope I have an answer for Too Pooped to Pop. We have a 1 1/2 yr old Havanese and several weeks ago he began to eat his poop also. Our pooch eats a high premium brand dog food and is very active. We called our wonderful veterinarian office, The Animal Doctor in Broomfield, and they recommended a product called, FOR-BID. We had to sprinkle a certain amount on his food morning and night for 5 to 6 days. It is only sold through a veterinarian. We hope it has curbed him of repeating this habit but they said sometimes a second "treatment" is necessary for some dogs. It has been over 2 weeks now since we stopped putting the powder on his food and so far he has not gone out to eat the poop. I also try to keep the poops picked up as often as I see them.

Happy Havanese Owner

Dear Happy.

I am indeed glad that your Vet's solution seems to be working for you. There are several products like the one you mention that claim dissuade pooches from Coprophagy (stool eating). I am assuming that your Vet knows your dog and therefore has eliminated the potential of medical reasons for the habit. I generally avoid suggesting products (I leave that to the Vets), as I believe most behaviors can be handled without the aid of products. However, at times (this might be one of them) a product can assist in the training process (excessive chewing comes to mind).

Thank you (and your Vet) for the response.

Dog Guy
