Dear
Dog Guy
- We got a new puppy for our kids. Our problem is he (about6 weeks) seems to like to go in the house, no matter how many times we bop him on the nose with the newspaper.
Big Bopper
in Westminster
Dear Big Bopper,
Well you are behind the times a bit. Not since the
New York Times
was printing "all the news that's fit to print" have professionals advocated bopping a pooch with a rolled-up paper for going potty in the wrong place. You omit a lot of information that would be helpful, but the short of it is to take the puppy to the place you would like him to eliminate in prior to his doing it in the wrong place, which means taking him "out" a lot (especially right after he eats) and being patient while he goes ... then waiting at least 10 minutes, as he'll most likely go again.

Agreed Gail.. Yes. it takes many times out for a while.. the best bet is, make sure they are praised when they do something right. It's kind of like kids. Tell them what they do right, more than what they do wrong.

It means keeping him at your side on a leash or in a crate when you can't babysit him. It means praising him for going in the right place. Bopping him will only teach a dog to start hiding it. He'll think all pooping is wrong. He won't connect that only pooping in the house is wrong.
