Jumping up!
Contributed by: Dave Pearson   on 3/29/2008

I have been having an ongoing conversation with a friend who has a Great American Dog (Mixed Breed) about how to stop him from jumping up on her in his enthusiastic greetings. She has, in the past, used the knee technique, when the human raiseds his/her knee so that the dog hits it when he/she jumps up. I dislike this technique and advocate other methods that are less confrontational and less painful for the pooch. They also take longer and focus on changing the dog's behavior. Recently she found yet another approach, which just proves what I've always maintained... nobody has a monopoly on what works! Below, formatted to fit this column/blog is her email. Sherman is the name of her dog, which is a border mix with a big fluffy tail.

Dear Dog Guy,

The Direct TV installer showed me how to keep Sherman from jumping up.
Just put your toe against his back foot (this only works if your legs are long enough)
He gets down immediately

It's just a forward motion, not a knee to the chest, just a simple slide. Slide your foot forward until your toe touches the dog's back foot. He's balancing on those back legs and the gentle touch make him think he might lose his balance, so he goes down on all fours. It's been working really well.

Your friend,

Dear Friend,

Good for you. I appreciate learning new stuff. I have not had a chance to try this method, but will when the occasion arises.

Dog Guy
