Blog Entry 297 of 330 Father Knows... Something. Let's figure out what.
This is my outlet to share with the world all the things I've learned - and continue to learn - about being the Father to 3 young children. But I should warn you that my experience is probably NOT yours: my wife and I are in the process of adopting a sibling set of 3 - all 6 years old and younger - while in our 40's. We've heard that, "it keeps you young," but so far, it has mostly kept us tired... But like any parent, our kids teach us something new every day and I hope to share at least something here with you at that same pace. The entries will be short - time constraints will probably keep it at or around a mere 200 words - but as they say, brevity is the soul of wit. Let's hope I can create some brevity here. So if you read something you like, please leave a comment. If you read something you don't, please just leave. (Just kidding - I'd love to hear from critics as well.)

The holiday that keeps on giving
Contributed by: Chris Stone   on 3/6/2008

Just to go on the record here, I share the same opinion of St. Valentine's Day as most men do. However - unlike many of them - I've (finally) learned to just shut my gift-hole and fork out the dollars as chocolate, flowers and/or jewelry (whichever recent events might best warrant) shower over my beloved bride.

In fact, in the "spirit of the holiday," I briefly considered including my daughter on that online gift list as a lark and surprise, but then quickly decided against it. After all, a 6-year-old receiving 18 tulips in a glass vase from her father - at her daycare center - would seem creepy at best.

And it would no doubt elicit the attention of county workers; most of whom we have currently eliminated from our lives, so why bother inviting them back if we can avoid it?

So instead, it would seem that I've left the "Valentine's" task to my daughter: I have received roughly 247 homemade cards to each one (1) I've given her since February 9 (but that's just an estimate). Every time I stay in bed longer than she does (not as often as I hope might happen), I get a Valentine's card or two or three shoved under my door.

They're always beautiful and obviously a gift from her heart. In fact, many of them include actual drawings of her and her brothers surrounded by streams of idealized hearts, which makes them more valuable than I can explain.

But there's also the question of storage, which means that I'll eventually have to explain the concept of "triage." Which means that I'm far more likely to toss her 13-year-old "yeah, whatever" Valentine's card than anything I've already seen her shove under my door to date.

I'm afraid she won't understand the concept as I understand it unless I save both, frankly. We'll see how much of her playspace in the back yard I'll be able to replace with storage sheds as she ages.

I suspect she'll do much better than I suspect because she always has...

Chris Stone is a slightly different - hopefully better - father and man than he was yesterday...

Meeeeehhhh, thank you, but I remain unconvinced. I almost never care about what others think of me, but I was teaching this preschool once...

Indeed, blogging gives one the right to make up appealing words. I think a daughter receiving tulips on any day from her father would be sweet, never creepy.

Well, would Pie-/Cake- work as well? Besides, I'm a blogger and that gives me the right to make up all the words I need, right?
