Blog Entry 298 of 330 Father Knows... Something. Let's figure out what.
This is my outlet to share with the world all the things I've learned - and continue to learn - about being the Father to 3 young children. But I should warn you that my experience is probably NOT yours: my wife and I are in the process of adopting a sibling set of 3 - all 6 years old and younger - while in our 40's. We've heard that, "it keeps you young," but so far, it has mostly kept us tired... But like any parent, our kids teach us something new every day and I hope to share at least something here with you at that same pace. The entries will be short - time constraints will probably keep it at or around a mere 200 words - but as they say, brevity is the soul of wit. Let's hope I can create some brevity here. So if you read something you like, please leave a comment. If you read something you don't, please just leave. (Just kidding - I'd love to hear from critics as well.)

Two 'love' stories
Contributed by: Chris Stone   on 3/12/2008

D-Man is our resident 3-year-old, and he's proving to be much more trouble now than he ever did when he was 2. At least in certain ways, to be honest. I can't say that he's trying to compensate for the extra trouble he's causing, but then I'm probably getting ahead of myself ...

He turned 3 to much family acclaim and then immediately became a huge pain in the arse; he was contrary, threw fits (where he hadn't before) and took great pains to go out of his way to thwart our efforts at discipline. Because he had no use of it, I expect.

But something else has been growing in him since that date: a deeply set sense of, well, affection, for lack of another term. He will - completely out of the blue and without prompt - tell me, "I LUV U Daddy" or express the same toward Mommy. It's all very heart-felt and extremely touching until one remembers that - just moments earlier - he asked, "What's that?" "A serving fork." Only to hear, "Oh, I LUV that survin furk."

Real convincing, kid ...

The other story has to do with my boys - as so many of them do. They are so close in age, talents and abilities that I'm more than willing to let them "fight to the death" in most of their conflicts. More or less. And I've noticed that my plan was pretty much their plan, until recently ...

The Binkster has a scream that we all recognize as, " D-Man has taken something from me." This usually resolves itself. Eventually, with bruises. D-Man has a cry that is universally accepted as, "I have been wronged in some general sense." We react accordingly to each signal and sooner or later they either beat the krep out of each other or we step in to right the wrong.

Depending on the level of noise and violence.

But things have taken a new and strange twist: My boys have now armed themselves for a "kissing war" between them. That is, as one offends the other and the violence seems to be escalating, one will say to the other, "I Love You!" and plant a kiss on that other person.

Since this is a completely unacceptable form of warfare, the offended child will respond with, "I Love You," and kiss another part of the offender's body. This can continue for minutes or even hours as they kiss each other to death. I don't know where they learned this, but I suspect Mommy.

She's a genius...

Chris Stone is a slightly different - hopefully better - father and man than he was yesterday ...

Well, comfortable enough to scream whenever he wants to or to call me a "banah-manah," but more about that later... Thank you.
