Blog Entry 300 of 329 Father Knows... Something. Let's figure out what.
This is my outlet to share with the world all the things I've learned - and continue to learn - about being the Father to 3 young children. But I should warn you that my experience is probably NOT yours: my wife and I are in the process of adopting a sibling set of 3 - all 6 years old and younger - while in our 40's. We've heard that, "it keeps you young," but so far, it has mostly kept us tired... But like any parent, our kids teach us something new every day and I hope to share at least something here with you at that same pace. The entries will be short - time constraints will probably keep it at or around a mere 200 words - but as they say, brevity is the soul of wit. Let's hope I can create some brevity here. So if you read something you like, please leave a comment. If you read something you don't, please just leave. (Just kidding - I'd love to hear from critics as well.)

MY girl's math
Contributed by: Chris Stone   on 3/17/2008

Like any Father, I'm very proud of my Daughter. I'm not going to let her think she's a princess or anything, I'm just very proud of her for the things she's able to do; and when she stretches herself it makes me not just all the more proud, but she's usually able to impress me, (not that I have low expectations, it's just amazing to watch).

But perhaps unlike other Fathers, I know that when I tell everyone who will listen, (and some who won't), about my Daughter's abilities with math and science that a certain amount of "yeah-whateverism" enters the conversation. I know this because I can still remember being on the other end of said conversation.

Well, now I've got something to say about her abilities that can't help but impress (IMHO): tonight I introduced her to an online sudoku site and she's already starting to show an impressive understanding of the concept. Mind you, we're talking about a 6 year old being introduced to a complex math puzzle that vexes many adults and demonstrating a grasp of the larger principles upon her first exposure to it. I think that's pretty impressive, even if I have to say so myself.

I've been saying that I need to get her more (closely supervised) time on the computer lately. We may have just stumbled on the answer: have I told you how my Daughter's starting to understand sudoku -- and she's only six?

She's a genius, I tell you...

Chris Stone is a slightly different - hopefully better - Father and man than he was yesterday...

One of my favorite expressions is; "remember that you're unique - just like everybody else." Thanks much, Dads...

Genius or not, we are all unique. Show her that, and how special she is, and you my friend, will be the genius she talks about.

Just keep telling her what a genius she is, and, even if she is not, she will grow to believe she is. Positive feedback goes a long way toward feelings of self worth and that may help her to want to achieve more in the future.
