Blog Entry 308 of 316 Father Knows... Something. Let's figure out what.
This is my outlet to share with the world all the things I've learned - and continue to learn - about being the Father to 3 young children. But I should warn you that my experience is probably NOT yours: my wife and I are in the process of adopting a sibling set of 3 - all 6 years old and younger - while in our 40's. We've heard that, "it keeps you young," but so far, it has mostly kept us tired... But like any parent, our kids teach us something new every day and I hope to share at least something here with you at that same pace. The entries will be short - time constraints will probably keep it at or around a mere 200 words - but as they say, brevity is the soul of wit. Let's hope I can create some brevity here. So if you read something you like, please leave a comment. If you read something you don't, please just leave. (Just kidding - I'd love to hear from critics as well.)

Who's training whom?

Years ago - and almost from the very first day we were married - one of The Wif's & my favorite pleasures was sleeping in on Saturday morning, then getting up to enjoy a hearty breakfast. Enter the children, and the whole thing becomes at first a theory, then just a fond memory.

Well, the sleeping in part; with these three ravenous locusts around, ANY meal could easily be described as 'hearty...'

As we became more and more accustomed to the kids' particular habits - D-Man is an early riser, The Binkster a reluctant riser and " M" is responsible enough to keep herself busy and out of harm's way - we learned that we could afford to sleep in for at least a little while.

Well, not "sleep in" exactly, but we could afford to stay in bed and entertain ourselves by listening to the monitor for a little while, instead of jumping into action at the first sound of discontent. As time wore on, we learned that leaving toys for the boys to play with was a mixed blessing; they had something to keep them busy, but they inevitably ended up fighting over the same toy. Which we eventually figured was OK, because they'd have to learn how to iron out these differences on their own sooner or later.

We then took it a step further and started leaving them sippy-cups of water and small bowls of cereal and fruit bars for them to snack on. And it worked beautifully; we've been able to extend our Rise Time from roughly 7:30 to 9:00 or so. Followed by stacks and stacks of their beloved Daddy's French Toast. We've only been doing this for a few weeks now, but they catch on quickly:

Wednesday morning Mommy went into the boys' room in order to get them going for the day, only to find D-Man reading a book and Binkster asleep, on the floor at his brother's feet. The older brother's first report to Mommy was, " Binky asleep on da floor agin." His second observation was, "Dere's no snack in here, Mommy!"

Apparently if the boys wake up before we wake them up, there's supposed to be a snack in it for them. We may be going back to the proverbial drawing board, but I'm willing to give it a few more weeks. After all, 90 minutes is 90 minutes...

Chris Stone is a slightly different - hopefully better - Father and man than he was yesterday...
