Blog Entry 309 of 316 Father Knows... Something. Let's figure out what.
This is my outlet to share with the world all the things I've learned - and continue to learn - about being the Father to 3 young children. But I should warn you that my experience is probably NOT yours: my wife and I are in the process of adopting a sibling set of 3 - all 6 years old and younger - while in our 40's. We've heard that, "it keeps you young," but so far, it has mostly kept us tired... But like any parent, our kids teach us something new every day and I hope to share at least something here with you at that same pace. The entries will be short - time constraints will probably keep it at or around a mere 200 words - but as they say, brevity is the soul of wit. Let's hope I can create some brevity here. So if you read something you like, please leave a comment. If you read something you don't, please just leave. (Just kidding - I'd love to hear from critics as well.)

It's, like, too difficult and WAY too early
Contributed by: Chris Stone   on 4/10/2008

There's an old saying that one should, "choose your battles," and either I'm doing exactly that or I haven't yet grasped the meaning of that phrase. Only time will tell, I suppose, but that's time I don't have...

My Daughter - " M" - has already peppered her language with the word, "like." As in, "I was, like, sitting on the stairs when the school, like, exploded and then..." I say "already" because SHE'S ONLY 6 YEARS OLD! Doesn't this sort of thing usually start in Middle School?

Better yet, neither her Mother or I use the word in conversation - except as a comparative or an expression of slight affection. Further, it's not as if she's exposed to any contemporary media where its use would constitute a majority of the dialogue. So how do these kids get infected with the "like" gene so early?

Well, I could blame the schools, but that's probably not the exact cause. I mean, they're supposed to teach grammar rather than drive all aberrations of it from our kids' minds and vocabularies. Instead, I suspect one of my Daughter's friends makes rather careless use of said preposition.

As a (n overly) protective Father, my first impulse is to dig the weed out at its root, (so to speak), but I also realize that my Daughter seems to make pretty good choices as far as friends go. This was confirmed by her teacher during our recent conference.

So what's a parent to do in this situation? We could simply decide to ignore it every time we hear, "our dog is, like, chewing on the neighbor's leg," or we could respond with, "he either IS chewing on the neighbor's leg or he isn't. And what's that siren all about?"

I guess either path has its own pitfalls, but I'm sure you're able to guess what we've decided to do...

Chris Stone is a slightly different - hopefully better - Father and man than he was yesterday...
