Blog Entry 314 of 315 Father Knows... Something. Let's figure out what.
This is my outlet to share with the world all the things I've learned - and continue to learn - about being the Father to 3 young children. But I should warn you that my experience is probably NOT yours: my wife and I are in the process of adopting a sibling set of 3 - all 6 years old and younger - while in our 40's. We've heard that, "it keeps you young," but so far, it has mostly kept us tired... But like any parent, our kids teach us something new every day and I hope to share at least something here with you at that same pace. The entries will be short - time constraints will probably keep it at or around a mere 200 words - but as they say, brevity is the soul of wit. Let's hope I can create some brevity here. So if you read something you like, please leave a comment. If you read something you don't, please just leave. (Just kidding - I'd love to hear from critics as well.)

All part of their plan, I'm sure

Last week, my little girl (" M") was diagnosed with an ear infection. Since she's an "older child," the doctor told us that she'd likely get over it with minimal intervention and recommended over-the-counter ear drops. Of course, as a back-up plan the doc also wrote a prescription for antibiotics.

A couple of days later, " M" was in a state: She had no appetite (the first and surest sign of distress in any of our children), she didn't want to play and slept for roughly 14 hours a day. (I had to check her birth certificate to make sure she wasn't a teenager.) We filled the prescription and she was quickly on the mend.

A few days after that, The Binkster started telling us that his "teef hurt." We'd medicate him and he'd get back up to speed pretty quickly. But then he started running a slight fever. THEN he wanted to do nothing but sleep and was impossible to wake up in the morning or after naps. When he refused to eat lunch ...

About that same time, I started to notice a "tickle" in my throat. I thought little of it because now that I'm constantly around the grass that I'm allergic to my head is an absolute mess; I wrote it off as a complication. UNTIL Mommy took The Binkster to the doctor and I heard the word I dread the most: strep.

See, I'm highly susceptible to strep. I usually joke that if I just hear the word, I catch it, and it's not completely a joke. So when I heard that our youngest had a confirmed case - and that Mommy had scheduled a test with our doc - I knew I had to be tested.

The quick test is supposed to take 5 minutes; the doc was back in less than 2. She poked and prodded, told me I was positive, told me to lose weight,(I can't drive past the office without one of them yelling that from the window), and I left with a prescription. I found out later that Mommy tested negative but the doc wrote her a script, too.

So here's where we stand: 2 kids who were sick have now been medicated for a number of days and are back at/near 100%. Mommy and I are now laid low with the same illness, but 3 kids who are healthy and (over) active. Can you see our problem?

Worse yet, D-Man hasn't been involved yet; " M" took the first attempt at making us sick and Binky finished the job. Phase 3 ( PROFIT!) must be up to D-Man, and that scares the life out of me. Quite possibly our smartest and most devious child, I can only imagine what he has in store for us. It worries the blood, it does.

I'll try to be on the lookout for signs of the plot, but in my current state ...

Chris Stone is a slightly different - hopefully better - Father and man than he was yesterday...
