Blog Entry 317 of 338 Father Knows... Something. Let's figure out what.
This is my outlet to share with the world all the things I've learned - and continue to learn - about being the Father to 3 young children. But I should warn you that my experience is probably NOT yours: my wife and I adopted a sibling set of 3 - all 6 years old and younger - while in our 40's. We've heard that, "it keeps you young," but so far, it has mostly kept us tired... But like any parent, our kids teach us something new every day and I hope to share at least something here with you as I can. The entries will be short - time constraints will probably keep it at or around a mere 200-400 words - but as they say, brevity is the soul of wit. Let's hope I can create some brevity here. So if you read something you like, please leave a comment. If you read something you don't, please just leave. (Just kidding - I'd love to hear from critics as well.)

Of new beginnings and watching things end
Contributed by: Chris Stone   on 5/22/2008

My little girl is about to finish her first year of school; she's going to graduate from kindergarten next week and it's hitting me much harder than I ever imagined it would when we started the process. After all, it's just school, right?

In the past "school year," she's no doubt learned things that will serve her well and probably things that I hope she will eventually forget, but it all gets sorted out in the end, I suppose. And until then I have to remind myself that the 4-year-old we welcomed into our house all those days ago is now set to enter first grade in August.

Yes - OUR August. I checked and the change in daylight saving time hasn't affected us to such an extent that I'm able to postpone her entry into first grade. So I'm TOTALLY messed up on that front. I'll have to investigate the possibility of cutting through the fabric of space and time in order to allow a delay, but I'm pretty well resigned to the idea that she'll have to be in First Grade Sometime around mid-August.

What a change a mere couple of years can make, eh?

So as her kindergarten year ends, I can't help but think that we're going to move forward and things will be easier for Mom and Dad. At least until I realize that she's already signed up for soccer and will be registered for swimming lessons as soon as one of us can get to the building in order to produce an ID showing we now live within the district where others paid taxes in order to construct that same building in the first place.

But that hardly matters: My little girl is about to finish kindergarten. I couldn't be more proud...

Chris Stone is a slightly different - hopefully better - man and father than he was yesterday...

I know exactly what you mean; every time I turn around we're passing a new milestone here. Things are always in a state of flux. And Mick? I know exactly what you mean -- but just let her try it around me!! Thank you all...

What's amazing is how their vocabulary expands once they hit first grade....
