Blog Entry 329 of 338 Father Knows... Something. Let's figure out what.
This is my outlet to share with the world all the things I've learned - and continue to learn - about being the Father to 3 young children. But I should warn you that my experience is probably NOT yours: my wife and I adopted a sibling set of 3 - all 6 years old and younger - while in our 40's. We've heard that, "it keeps you young," but so far, it has mostly kept us tired... But like any parent, our kids teach us something new every day and I hope to share at least something here with you as I can. The entries will be short - time constraints will probably keep it at or around a mere 200-400 words - but as they say, brevity is the soul of wit. Let's hope I can create some brevity here. So if you read something you like, please leave a comment. If you read something you don't, please just leave. (Just kidding - I'd love to hear from critics as well.)

Living with little creatures
Contributed by: Chris Stone   on 7/15/2008

One of the true joys of being a parent is watching your kids grow and age and develop new ways of interacting with the world around them. I'm sure any parent would agree with me on that: they seem to grow up so fast -- until you come to a single realization: those kids haven't heard a single thing you've told them in at least three years. Not once, not ever.

Now it doesn't take a rocket surgeon to figure out that if your child is less than three years old you've been wasting your breath for the whole of their life. Of course they show signs - sparks, if you will - of having heard what you said but they're largely just parroting it back to you in order to get what they want;

" More water."

"How do we ask?"

" Pleezeee..."

"That's better."

It's enough to make one wonder who's training whom, but I believe I've already covered that subject.

And it doesn't seem to matter what you say, how you say it or the context in which you say it. My Knuckleheads could care less if I'm telling them to "pick up toys," "stop hitting your brother," "get into your pajamas" or to "poopy in the potty." They really can't seem to be bothered in the least by what drives me the most crazy. And that last one is pretty much at the top of the list, frankly.

But little matter: in a mere 5 months my oldest son will turn 4. We'll start making real headway against that 3 year barrier at that point, and I'll be sure to hold him to it.

I can't wait...

Chris Stone is a slightly different - hopefully better - Father and man than he was yesterday...

You know, it would be one thing if we even saw flashes of such enthusiasm; all WE get are shrugs and "whatevers." I'd swat him on the rear, but well -- you know... Mick - I'm going to guess he didn't gain that status from your basement, which is a very good thing! (Glad to hear he seems to be doing well.) Thanks much.

I am SO happy to know I'm not the only one going through the trials and tribulations of potty training. I love it when she excitedly comes running up and says, "Come on mommy!! Potty!" just in time for me to catch the whiff of the fact that she already had in her big girl pants. Thanks for making me feel not so alone in this adventure called potty training.

Before you know it they'll be 18. And with luck they'll have years and years of your blogs to read. By the by, my kid just reached "Marksman" status with an M-16 yesterday. Put that in your pipe and smoke it....lol mc
