Blog Entry 333 of 342 Father Knows... Something. Let's figure out what.
This is my outlet to share with the world all the things I've learned - and continue to learn - about being the Father to 3 young children. But I should warn you that my experience is probably NOT yours: my wife and I adopted a sibling set of 3 - all 6 years old and younger - while in our 40's. We've heard that, "it keeps you young," but so far, it has mostly kept us tired... But like any parent, our kids teach us something new every day and I hope to share at least something here with you as I can. The entries will be short - time constraints will probably keep it at or around a mere 200-400 words - but as they say, brevity is the soul of wit. Let's hope I can create some brevity here. So if you read something you like, please leave a comment. If you read something you don't, please just leave. (Just kidding - I'd love to hear from critics as well.)

Looking back, looking forward

August 18. My wife and I left work with a huge sense of adventure and no small sense of trepidation. It was our 'short day' (we worked a federal schedule that allowed one day off every two weeks and one 8 hour day in the same period), so we felt as if we got a bit of a jump on the weekend traffic. But the lead was rather short-lived, because we had two stops to make before we could go home.

Because this was the day our kids were moving in with us...

We drove through the streets of Lakewood and stopped at " M" and D-Man's foster home. My Wife took " M's" hand and I carried D-Man and their possessions to the car. It was a bittersweet moment, because in one arm I held a delightful, charming boy who would eventually become my son and in the other I held all that they had; and it fit into the two backpacks we'd bought them and a single grocery bag. This was truly a new start for all of us.

On our way up the mountain my wife asked me, "are you ready for this?" I responded in my usual fashion; "it's a bit late to be asking me that," and we headed to our next stop.

It was little more than a mountain roadside pull-off and they were already waiting for us there. We parked next to them and I eagerly got out. I think it was too much for her to bear, because as I recall she "lingered" over The Bink a bit - and who can blame her? Then again, Elvis could have beamed down from a hovering UFO singing Cheap Trick covers backed by a chorus of aliens and I wouldn't have noticed, (unless they did " Dream Police").

We loaded Bink into his car seat and his stuff - again, little more than the clothes on his back - into the trunk. While still about 40 minutes from our home, our adventure was already underway.

...

Tomorrow marks our family's second anniversary. Like every other family, we have a wedding anniversary and we each have birthdays. But we have one more day than most families do: a single day we can point to when 5 lives were joined together into a single entity under one roof.

It's a very special day...

Chris Stone is a slightly different - hopefully better - Father and man than he was two years ago...
