Blog Entry 66 of 82 Baseball, football, the Grateful Dead,Jesus and me
Could be politics, religion, music, sports, family life or anything in-between and outside the lines. (I refuse to say "outside the box," even if my chosen line means exactly the same thing) Chronologically, I'm 40. The consensus among those who know me best puts me somewhere between 10 and 13 in terms of maturity. I love listening to Jimmy Buffett, the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers and all acts Country (except the Dixie Chicks who offended my long-held,closed-minded view of decent behavior) I have deep, strong beliefs in all things I believe in and sometimes in things I don't. I pride myself in my contradictory nature even though it is a sign of weakness to change one's mind. I have been known to waver more than John Kerry talking about national defense, though I remain steadfast in my beliefs. I am prepared to argue to the death on one issue and one issue alone; Dickey Betts should be allowed back in the Allman Brothers. On this, there is no compromise. I believe in compromise in all other areas so long as the compromise includes everything that I want or believe in. In all seriousness, I am a lucky man, blessed with a wonderful family and an uncanny ability to not care about anything if the situation requires such. I believe that minds are like parachutes in that they have been known to fail their user, albeit with a slightly lower fatality rate. So that's me, or at least that's kind of me. I mean, I felt that way right before I didn't.

Teddy Bears Are Cool
Contributed by: Bill Prather   on 2/9/2008

Teddy Bears are cool. If you don't agree, stop reading now. (Mr. Crandall, stop now, please! We all know you hate Teddy Bears!)

Lots of other things are cool. Some things aren't cool.

What's cool?

Marines.

What's not cool?

Berkeley, California city council; for trying to ban the Marines and other military recruiters. A man named Adolf employed the same tactics in Germany once.

Cool: Military men and women heading to Iraq. Yeah, we're defending your freedom! Like it or not, our men and women in uniform are doing the dirty work for you!

Not Cool: People who confuse politics with honor. Some stand for what they believe, others whine. Honor demands that decent people stand for what they believe. Cowardice says we just type some stuff once-in-a-while when we're not bold enough to truly stand for what we believe in. You know, like our liberal friends. So quick to point-out what's wrong - - - yet never offerring a real solution. Get real, friends. If it's wrong, fix it! Otherwise, . . . well what do you do? Is Obama the Wizzard? "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!"

Cool: My liberal friends who support my service, despite the fact that they disagree with the cause.

Not Cool: Narrow-minded, hateful people who attack me and others for what we beleive. We sacrifice for you. Why must you hate us? We're not asking for your approval, we're just doing what we believe is right. Why is it that what we believe deserves ridicule while your beliefs (opinions, eh?) somehow are beyond reproach?

Cool: The fact that I can offer my opinions and leave myself open to the vitriol and silly attacks of people who hate. I don't really mind. Sometimes people hate.

Hate isn't always bad.

Cool: People who hate. They often make points for those they oppose.

Not Cool: Hatred directed at individuals because we disagree with their opinions. Brian . . . Brian . . .

Cool: People who have something worthwhile to say.

Not Cool: People who hate . . . without knowing the people they pretend to know. . .

I wrote it and I stand behind it. Yep, I wrote it!

What's cool? You decide.

Personally, I'm more concerned with what's right.

Cool is "cool." But right is right.

Love you all. I really do. That's why I do what I do.

What have you done for your fellow man? Where's your sacrifice?

What's not cool? Michelle Obama saying for the 1st time in her life she is proud of her country. The same country that provided her with a top notch education a nice home, freedom of speech, the right to make a good living and reach your full potential if you want to work hard enough. This makes me angry. As I read about Mr.Prather leaving his family to stand up for this country and her and her family's rights,to say something like that is why we are in such a mess.People don't think this is still the greatest country on earth. It is far from perfect but it is still a decent country with decent people.Just remember this if the liberals take over. A government big enough to give you everything you want,is strong enough to take everything you have. Thomas Jefferson

What's cool? You serving your country and standing for something. Our country is still a noble one and not perfect, but it's our country. What's not cool? The people who refuse to stop drinking the kool-aid. Please come back and share with us your experiences.Your family has a lot of people praying for them.If they need some help ,I think you have my e-mail.Let me know if your wife needs some help with the children or anything I can do to help her and your children.

After reading some responses.. I can say I support the policies.. and the troops.. I would like to add that some would like to back up their beliefs.. but are getting too old to do so.

Bill, There is a certain conservative, somewhat boring, talk show host on KOA every weekday morning at 9 who claims if you don't support the policy you can't support the troops. What a pile of doodoo. I am not sure our troops should be there (re;don't support the policy), but since they are, let's give them every means to get it over with and get back home (re;support the troops!). I would favor a 1 year, mandatory enlistment for every able bodied man under 50 (I'm 49)so we could flood the place with our guys. I don't like body counts even more than I don't like personal attacks in politics.

Though dancing close to that line between matters of public interest and what might amounts to personal exchange, you raise good points, Bill. Here is a hard truth: Making a positive difference on a significant scale involves taking the road less traveled and one of life's ironies is that committing to travel that bumpy road almost always earns you scorn. The status quo is usually fervently defended, even by those (especially by those) who have never invested any effort to understand it.
