Blog Entry 2 of 5 Get over it and buy your gas
So people write, call and complain about gas prices and everyone gets worked up when oil corporations make billions of dollars. Thus begs a few questions and observations -Is the 10-12 percent ROI the oil companies really out of line? How many people are going to invest in an industry with smaller percentages? -How many of the complainers have stocks/mutual funds invested in oil? I'm betting a lot. -Economic lesson-Oil is world commodity in high demand prices are based on WORLD demand not local demand. I'd also like to note that oil/gas is one of the cheapest forms of energy. It is also not limited, at least not in the any threatining time frame, and in abundant supply. -Oil companies do not set prices for crude oil-They are price takers. -Hey why don't we buld some nuclear plants? -Isn't the whole idea of capitalism to make money? Are we going to continue to punish success(ie Microsoft/Bill Gates)? -How come people complain so much about the price of a gallon of gas, but are more than willing to fork over $4 for a cup of coffee ie Starbucks? You can always change your traveling and commuting habits, but I feel we have not quite reached that price point. Until then enjoy what is still the chaepest most efficient way to get around.

1984 Newspeak arrives 2007
Contributed by: Nathan Hatcher   on 3/2/2007

I thought we lived in the United States -- you know, the country with freedom of speech and guaranteed rights under the first amendment to the constitution. Then I see a student gets in trouble for saying the phrase "that's so gay" when she was being teased by fellow classmates about her religion (Mormon). I am even more shocked when I find out that policy exists right here in the Jeffco School District.

How far down this road are we going to go. Pretty soon one will not be able to criticize or make a casual reference about any person or group, for fear of offending someone. Whether you disagree with a phrase or someone's point of view, one should still have the right to be heard or speak without fear of retribution.

I wonder if the other students got in trouble for mocking the Mormon religion. Oh, I guess that didn't happen.
