Blog Entry 9 of 86 Baseball, football, the Grateful Dead,Jesus and me
Could be politics, religion, music, sports, family life or anything in-between and outside the lines. (I refuse to say "outside the box," even if my chosen line means exactly the same thing) Chronologically, I'm 40. The consensus among those who know me best puts me somewhere between 10 and 13 in terms of maturity. I love listening to Jimmy Buffett, the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers and all acts Country (except the Dixie Chicks who offended my long-held,closed-minded view of decent behavior) I have deep, strong beliefs in all things I believe in and sometimes in things I don't. I pride myself in my contradictory nature even though it is a sign of weakness to change one's mind. I have been known to waver more than John Kerry talking about national defense, though I remain steadfast in my beliefs. I am prepared to argue to the death on one issue and one issue alone; Dickey Betts should be allowed back in the Allman Brothers. On this, there is no compromise. I believe in compromise in all other areas so long as the compromise includes everything that I want or believe in. In all seriousness, I am a lucky man, blessed with a wonderful family and an uncanny ability to not care about anything if the situation requires such. I believe that minds are like parachutes in that they have been known to fail their user, albeit with a slightly lower fatality rate. So that's me, or at least that's kind of me. I mean, I felt that way right before I didn't.

Hating Plummer is stupid
Contributed by: Bill Prather   on 8/12/2006

Some people are so far removed from reality that it's almost unfair to take them on. For instance, the "hate Jake" crowd in Denver. Granted, it's not entirely their fault. They were spoiled by the exploits of a great quarterback in John Elway. I've seen it before. Plummer faces what we called the "Curse of Brooks" when I was a kid in Baltimore.

It goes like this: A great player, one of the best at his position, plays for the home team for a decade and a half. Along the way, the team wins a championship or two. When said player retires, everyone who follows at his position "sucks." It's as stupid as it is predictable. (Yes, I said stupid. Because it is.)

After Brooks Robinson retired, I watched countless third basemen carry the epithet, "Brooks would have had it." Didn't matter that the ball was12 feet over the man's head. It's the same in Broncoland. People ignorant in the finer aspects of football are blaming Jake Plummer for everything from a Broncos loss to global warming.

Wake up, jackass! Plummer is not John Elway and he never will be. Guess what? No one will ever be John Elway. Luckily for the Broncos, Jake Plummer is one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL. Not only that, he's one of the better guys.

I had the pleasure of spending a morning with Jake when he was just another guy. He signed everything put in front of him and posed for countless pictures with fans. (Real fans, I presume. Not the pretend Broncos fans who boo Plummer from the safety of the stands. Come on, tough guy, stand up for real. What are you, a sissy? Probably. Tell him in person what you think!) Jake answered every question, smiled at every kid and shook everyone's hand. Still, he's not John Elway. In some regards, he's better.

Who holds the Broncos single-season record for passing yardage? Jake Plummer (4,089). Most yards in one game? Plummer (499). Touchdown passes in one season? Tied. Plummer and Elway (27). Career passer rating? Plummer (87 to Elway's 79.9).

I can hear you. "BUT ELWAY WON TWO SUPER BOWLS!!!!" Yes, he did. In years 15 and 16. Before that, what happened? The Giants. Redskins. 49ers (was it five picks)? Give Jake time. You gave John 14 years!

Denver used to have a reputation as a city with great football fans. Sadly, that reputation is a fading memory. Drunk, overweight, aging jocks throwing insults at the home-team's quarterback have put Denver in the same zip code as the Raiders faithful. Fueled by alcohol and their own shortcomings, so-called fans attack Plummer at every opportunity. Perhaps they're entitled. They paid for their tickets. Like their brethren in Oakland's Black Hole, the Plummer haters have nothing to offer besides the unintelligible rantings of drunken morons.

The majority of Broncos fans are knowledgeable football people. It's a shame that a few loud-mouthed, ignorant "fans" have taken over the once proud environs of Broncoland.

I say, "Take it back Broncos fans!" Drown out the hateful cries of the pitiful Plummer haters. Those people don't really speak for you, do they? You can find better representation under a bridge on Speer Boulevard.

As for the "blame Plummer" crowd: Get back on your meds. Also, learn something about football. Or do you really believe that Elway was better than Unitas? Some people have no hope.

Mr. Prather, Since you had the opportunity to spend time with good 'ol Jakey recently, perhaps you should have asked for his phone number. That way you could call him directly to ask him on a date, rather than post your literary Plumber shrine constructed of feces for all to see and snicker at. Thank you for the good laugh. You have brightened my day as I am sure you have countless other people

Nice, Mr. Prather. However, I think you are missing an important point. Jake Plummer is a public relations nightmare due to his apparent inability to control his emotions and actions. With the job of high profile professional athlete comes responsibility to handle one's self well in the spotlight. Has Jake Plummer handled himself as a mature professional or a spoiled, impulsive child? How many public relations points can one realistically expect to win insulting fans and openly displaying fits of irrational anger?

I can't (nor would I want to) speak for all Bronco fans, but let me educate you a little on why some of us think he is far superior in every category to Jake Plummer. Elway was great because of what he did with what he had. He did not inherent the same type of team that Jake did - which includes a coach that knows how to get the most out of his offense and a balanced running game. Just compare Jake's numbers at Arizona to those under Shanahan. The difference is Elway would have won with Jake's Arizona squad. Elway brought his team to 5 Super Bowls. We are still waiting on Jake's first. Elway won more games than any other QB in history, including your beloved Johnny U. Simply put, take both players in their prime and let's pick for a quick sandlot game. You can take your Jake and his charitable nature and I'll take good old Big John and we'll see how far your "well put" insight gets you. My guess is - not even close....

Well put, William. Jake deserves better. More than I can say for a good percentage of Bronco fans.
