Blog Entry 40 of 82 Baseball, football, the Grateful Dead,Jesus and me
Could be politics, religion, music, sports, family life or anything in-between and outside the lines. (I refuse to say "outside the box," even if my chosen line means exactly the same thing) Chronologically, I'm 40. The consensus among those who know me best puts me somewhere between 10 and 13 in terms of maturity. I love listening to Jimmy Buffett, the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers and all acts Country (except the Dixie Chicks who offended my long-held,closed-minded view of decent behavior) I have deep, strong beliefs in all things I believe in and sometimes in things I don't. I pride myself in my contradictory nature even though it is a sign of weakness to change one's mind. I have been known to waver more than John Kerry talking about national defense, though I remain steadfast in my beliefs. I am prepared to argue to the death on one issue and one issue alone; Dickey Betts should be allowed back in the Allman Brothers. On this, there is no compromise. I believe in compromise in all other areas so long as the compromise includes everything that I want or believe in. In all seriousness, I am a lucky man, blessed with a wonderful family and an uncanny ability to not care about anything if the situation requires such. I believe that minds are like parachutes in that they have been known to fail their user, albeit with a slightly lower fatality rate. So that's me, or at least that's kind of me. I mean, I felt that way right before I didn't.

Broncos: "All Jagged-up"
Contributed by: Bill Prather   on 9/24/2007

An overcast, drippy day greeted me when I awoke this morning. Outside, rain and leaves were falling, a lot like the Denver Broncos' post-season hopes. Maybe the Colorado sky was crying for Denver's wounded heroes. Or maybe it's just the weather. You know, low-pressure system or something.

This one stung a little. My seat Sunday was "obstructed view." Unfortunately, I could see all-to-well. Lying darn ticket people!

Actually, a little part of the sideline was obstructed toward the far end-zone. Otherwise, nothing got in the way. Kind of like when Jacksonville had the ball. Not much in their way, either. They held the ball for what, like 90 minutes? I'm not even sure how the Broncos scored with negative time-of-possession.

I must say, I'm somewhat disappointed in some members of Bronco-nation. I'm really trying to embrace the Broncos but no one seemed interested in making a good impression Sunday. With over five minutes left in the game, thousands of "fans" headed to the exits. Maybe they were trying to beat the rush, but from where I sat, they were the rush.

Folks can rationalize all they wish, but barring a medical emergency or not wanting to miss the Ravens kickoff, there's no excuse. By the way, the Ravens played the early game Sunday, so scratch that one. I'm willing to listen to any reasonable person but I must warn you, I'm not reasonable. I once sat in a cold, steady downpour for three and a half hours watching the Baltimore Colts lose 21-7 to the Miami Dolphins. I'm not proud. The game wasn't even as close as the score, yet we didn't leave early!

Is it that Denver fans really aren't as die-hard as many want to believe? Or is it just the corporate seats and other freebies who stampeded the exits during the fourth quarter?

What's an aspiring Broncomaniac to think? It isn't like Sunday's game was a total surprise. The Broncos escaped by the skin of their teeth twice against teams that will probably win seven games between them. I'm aware it was Jacksonville and perhaps the scars remain from January 1997.

Broncos fans needn't panic yet. Even if they do as expected in Indy, the worst the Broncos can be is in a virtual tie for first, at 2-2. Who knows, maybe they'll find the mojo this week and take it to Peyton and the boys in Hoosier town! I wonder how many of the pretenders who left Mile High early Sunday will jump right back if the Broncos should beat Indianapolis?

For shame, for shame. A guy from Baltimore, still trying to learn the ropes here in Denver, is a better "fan" than thousands of predominantly Orange bleeding pretenders. Come on, Denver! Buck-up and show you're better than that. I, for one, believe you are!

I think it stinks when fans leave a game early. Unless you're late for your colonoscopy appointment, keep your behinder on that bleacher and eat a hot dog, dangit. ~from a WSU fan who sat through a lot of losing games.

I think you hit the nail on the head when you mentioned the corporate freebies. Seems like at the old Mile High when the tickets were affordable you had the true orange and blue fans. I know several folks that opted out of their season tickets at the new Mile High and just bought better TVs that are now oboslete. 20 years of sell outs, yeah right, ever take a look at the suite level? Maybe those don't count. Go Donkys!!!

Karin, it's hard to understand. Like a curse of sorts. Attachment to a sports team can't be explained, it just . . . is. My only theory is that it is a passion passed from generation to generation. My Dad loved the Baltimore Colts and now the Ravens, Mom loves the Orioles. I have great memories of both, so maybe that's where I get it. Ah, heck now I'm theorizing on the psychology of sports fandom! I have no idea!

I don't get the whole loyalty to a sports team thing. On the other hand, I'm not a poseur, either.

I hear ya, Bill! I just posted an article giving them hell for booing. I'm sure it was the pretenders that both booed and left early.

That's a bummer people left early -- I watched the whole thing, if at home! My boyfriend (self-proclaimed Broncomanic) would say the Broncos stadium has been sold out the last 20 seasons or so, blah blah, so that proves the fans are true -- but Bill and Gene, you guys bring up some good points about the "fairweather" fans.

Dude ... how long have you lived in Denver?!? There are precious-few true loyalists among those professing to be Broncos "fans" and far too many sunshine-soldiers. When the team wins, they paint the town Orange and Blue. When the team loses, they moan & howl about how pathetic last week's hero is. Loyalty and Faith are lost concepts among these people!
