Breaking my own rules
Contributed by: Travis Henry   on 4/14/2006

I have been very reluctant to blog about citizen journalism.

The worst new trend I see on the Internet is the emergence of a new breed of freelance journalists who deem themselves citizen journalism experts and then use their electronic forum to rant against "untrained" people or - shut your eyes real tight right now - business owners, politicians and grandmothers exercising their First Amendment rights.

"It's not journalism!" they scream at the top of their lungs. Well, it may not be "journalism" in the same sense of what is going on in other newsrooms, but it has been coined "citizen journalism," and I'm pretty sure it's going to stick. Get over it.

At last count, there are about six of these so-called citizen journalism experts. You can tell who they are because they always comment on each other's articles and usually will include in these comments a link to something they posted themselves.

We built YourHub.com so all community members - even business owners, public relations officers and grandmothers - could participate online.

To the normal Internet user, including myself, nothing is more boring than "blogging about blogging."

Yet, here I sit today, doing the exact thing I despise. Sigh.

I guess the seal was broken when I agreed to do a Podcast with BusinessWeek. Scroll down to The Cutting Edge on the Podcast pageto listen.

And no, that's not what my voice sounds like and, no, my nose wasn't plugged.

It's a conspiracy I tell you.
