Werner Dewes
Contributed by: Emmanuel Gallery on 9/23/2008

What:
Denver - Emmanuel Gallery is very pleased to announce our upcoming exhibition "Werner Drewes" which will feature works of the late artist amassed from four different collections in Denver, Colorado. "Werner Drewes" will open on September 25 with a reception from 4:00-7:00pm. This exhibition will continue through October 25.

Werner Drewes was born in Canig, Germany in 1899 and moved to the United States in 1930. Drewes experimented with many of the artistic styles of the 20th century influenced by artists in both countries. Drewes produced over 750 prints (of which over 400 are woodcuts) as well as some one thousand oil paintings and hundreds of watercolors, drawings and collages. This exhibition will feature forty-eight pieces, primarily color and black and white woodcuts.

The Bauhaus and its instructors influenced Drewes' early career. In 1921 he studied under Paul Klee and in the later years of the Bauhaus under Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and Wassily Kandinsky. Drewes expressionistic style was strong throughout his career.

Drewes immigrated to New York City in 1930 after the political climate became too oppressive in Europe. By the mid-1930s Drewes was very active in the art scene as one of the founding members of the American Abstract Artists and was a member of the Federal Arts Project. During this time, Drewes began teaching. In 1946 he was appointed a teaching position at Washington University in St. Louis Missouri and during his tenure there, met and became friends with Max Beckman. Drewes continued to teach there until his retirement in 1965.

Throughout his artistic career Drewes was a constant and prolific printmaker who explored the dynamism of the media. In 1984, the National Museum of American Art presented a retrospective of Drewes' graphic works, one year before the artist's death in 1985.

This Exhibition draws from the Collections of the Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art, Amy Metier, Nancy & Paul Hughes, and Jill A. Wiltse & H. Kirk Brown III, all of Denver, Colorado. Emmanuel Gallery is always free and open to the public. We are open Tuesday - Friday 10-6 and Saturday 11-5. Please join us!
