Pat Racanelli, Jesse Young, Matt Easler and Neal Huffaker, took top honors, at the 5th Annual Ugly Coat Classic Golf Tournament at Broadlands Golf Club Saturday, July 25, 2009. The winning team edged a competitive field of 136 golfers at 20 under par in the Best Ball Scramble format on a beautiful afternoon among friends and generous supporters of a wonderful cause.
The tournament, hosted by
Two Angels Foundation, Inc, honors the memory of
Allyson and Rachel Mohatt, daughters of Pomona HS graduates,
Roger and Dawn Mohatt. Both girls were diagnosed with Nemaline Myopathy, a rare form of Muscular Dystrophy. Providing Allyson and Rachel with the most normal life possible was their family's primary goal. Both Allyson and Rachel appreciated the privilege of attending their own neighborhood preschools, all made possible because of the adaptive equipment that was available to them.
The inspiration of Mohatt family has touched the lives of a growing community of supporters and events which contribute to the opportunities through money raised for these splendid causes. Their daughter Allyson was born April 12, 1995 and appeared to be healthy and vibrant at birth. She was a dream come true for her loving family. At a two month check-up she was not physically progressing and at one year a muscle biopsy revealed Nemaline Myopathy, a rare form of Muscular Dystrophy. Since neither parent had any history of muscular disease, doctors advised that the chances of having another child with this disease were very slim. Unfortunately, that was not the case. Rachel was born on April 8, 1999 and at four months old was diagnosed with the same disease. While both girls had big hearts and active minds, the disease made them extremely weak. Both girls relied on the use of special walkers and both needed custom wheelchairs. The lack of muscular development made such routine sicknesses as the common cold a life threatening ailment.Though both Allyson and Rachel had numerous hospital stays, weekly therapy sessions and scores of medical appointments, they were happy and vibrant little girls.
The Miles for Smiles 5K, held in May each year in the Broomfield County Commons Park also benefits the Two Angels Foundation. With the discerning support of
Dr. Nicholas Abbey and
Physical Therapist, Beth Hutchinson, applications are reviewed for distribution of funds raised from both events and other benevolent donations. Hutchinson, a Physical Therapist at The Children's Hospital was deeply affected by her relationship with the Mohatt girls. "I had the pleasure of knowing both Allyson and Rachel, but was Rachel's physical therapist. One of the pleasures I had working with Rachel was helping to make her smile. And what made her smile was doing things by herself. With the help of equipment and technology there wasn't much she couldn't do. She could walk, she could drive her chair and she could even ride a bike. Fortunately, adaptive equipment exists to allow kids just like Allyson and Rachel to participate in everyday activities with their peers. Unfortunately, most insurance companies do not fund any piece of equipment that isn't considered medical
ly necessary".
The Board of Directors of Two Angels Foundation, Inc (
Dawn Mohatt, President;
Roger Mohatt, Chairman;
Julie Mackin, Secretary;
Carrie Hooper, Treasurer; and Directors
Michelle Cowgill, Steve Hooper, Kathleen Huss, John Mackin, Douglas Moore, Matt Pascal, Stef Pascal, Greg Whisler, Kim Willis, Matt Winchester and Shalene Madden are dedicated to obtaining funding for adaptive equipment to ease the financial burden for families of children as such equipment is frequently not covered by health insurance. Two Angles Foundation Director, Director Kathleen Huss explained, "Providing them with the most normal and fun life possible was their family's primary goal. That has now become the mission of the Two Angels Foundation. We want to help physically disabled children have fun! We purchase recreational adaptive equipment (bikes, swings and walkers), fund adaptive recreational activities (horseback riding, skiing and swimming) and provide adaptive equipment to help children participate at school. These items can be very costly and a financial burden for many families, and in most cases are not covered by health insurance. The Two Angels Foundation is committed to providing fun and recreational opportunities to physically disabled children in Colorado".
Among the growing community of long time supporters and volunteers included Pomona HS Football Coach
Jay Madden, and a number of his players, who served as golf bag valets for the participants.
