Dear Dot,
Several months ago, I read that trains were not going to be allowed to blow their whistles through the entire town of Arvada. What ever happened to that? I sure am tired of their wake-up call around 4 a.m. every morning. I don't even live that close to the train tracks. I can't imagine how those poor people feel who do live close to the tracks.
Thanks,
Julie
Dear Julie,
According to
Ed Stafford
, transportation engineer for the city of Arvada, trains are required to blow their horns any time they cross a street, so your 4 a.m. wake-up calls might be around for a while.
The good news is that the city is working on making improvements to street crossings to eliminate noise. According to a document provided by Stafford, by using flashing lights, gates, bells, constant warning circuitry and power-off indicators, public crossings will be safe enough to be designated "quiet zones," which means trains won't need to blow their horns.
The city will be testing two quiet zones; one at Pierce Street and one at the Kipling Street/West 72nd Avenue/Simms Street Corridor. These quiet zones are anticipated to be fully operational by the end of 2007, according to Stafford. If the quiet zones turn out to be a success, the city will look into establishing them in additional locations.
