SUMMER READING CLUB SERVES UP LAUGHTER AND GOOD READS
Continued reading over summer months helps children advance in school
(Jefferson County, Colo. - May 17, 2007) Join Jefferson County Public Library's Summer Reading Club, June 1 - July 31, and enjoy a summer filled with good books and humorous programs. The Library offers Summer Reading Club for kids, teens and adults, so there's something for everybody.
The Summer Reading Club works to foster literacy, especially among "at-risk" kids who need help developing their reading skills, and encourages kids to spend more time with books. The Club also encourages parents to become involved in their children's reading activities.
According to a report by the U.S. Department of Education, most students make steady progress in reading during the school year, but tend to fall behind during the summer months. The Summer Reading Club encourages kids and teens to read over the summer to keep their reading skills sharp for the new school year.
The Kids' Summer Reading Club, "Laugh it Up at the Library," features hilarious programs, such as "The Emperor's New Clothes...and Other Ugly Ducks," "Jumpin', Jammin' and Laughin' with Mr. Shine," "The Magic of Laughter" and more. To get kids excited about reading and encourage them to read more, a free paperback book is awarded to kids who read for at least eight hours plus they're entered into a prize drawing. The Kids' Summer Reading Club is open to all kids, infants through age 12.
The Library's Teen Summer Reading Club, "Stand Up Summer," features a variety of fun-filled programs, including "Funny Business," where teens will learn tricks of the trade from professional stand-up comedians, "Make 'Em Laugh: Injecting Humor Into Your Writing," and others. Teens who read or listen to books for eight hours or more will receive a free paperback and be entered into a grand prize drawing for an iPod Shuffle and an iTunes gift card.
Summer Reading Clubs are sponsored by the Jefferson County Library Foundation and Friends of the Jefferson County Public Library. If kids and teens read a total of 150,000 hours, the Foundation will donate $1,000 to the Victim Services Kids' Program, administered by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. The donation will be used to purchase books for kids who are working through traumas. In 2006, kids and teens read for a total of 196,000 hours, easily surpassing the reading goal of 140,000 hours.
Find a complete list of programs on the Library's web site or pick up a Summer Reading Club brochure at any Jefferson County Public Library.
