SUMMER READERS REWARDED AT THE LIBRARY
Summer Reading Club draws to a close with Book Award Days

(Jefferson County, Colo. - July 27, 2007) Jefferson County Public Library's kid's teens and adult Summer Reading Clubs officially end July 31, but not without rewarding its summer readers with prizes and entertainment on Book Award Day.

All Jefferson County Public Library locations are hosting an award day, and kids and teens who have read for at least eight hours can choose a free paperback book and enter a drawing for prizes, including iPods and gift certificates. Book Award Day offers fun activities for children of all ages, with clowns, face painting and more. The dates, times and locations for Book Award Days can be found on the Library's web site at http://jefferson.lib.co.us.

Reading Club participants reap the rewards of free books and prizes for continuing their reading during the summer months, but benefits continue long after summer ends. Summer Reading Club participants are more likely to keep their reading skills sharp for the new school year. According to a report by the U.S. Department of Education, most students make steady progress in reading during the school year, but tend to fall behind during the summer months.

Summer Reading Clubs are sponsored by the Jefferson County Library Foundation and Friends of the Jefferson County Public Library. Once the Book Award Day tallies are in, if kids and teens read for a total of 150,000 cumulative hours, the Foundation will donate $1,000 to the Victim Services Kids' Program, administered by the Jefferson County Sherriff's Office. The donation will be used to purchase books for kids who are working through trauma. In 2006, kids and teens read for a total of 196,000 hours, easily surpassing the annual goal 140,000 hours.
