January: a time to plan new trails
Contributed by: Gail Kirkegaard on 1/18/2008

Can you believe that it's 2008? I wish everybody a happy and healthy new year!

A new year presents new challenges and opportunities for Colorado's businesses and nonprofit organizations. It's a time to explore new trails in your adventure, trails you've heard of but never tried, trails which can lead to success.

Here in Colorado, we know that wise planning is important when we set off on an adventure. We need the right gear to trek through craggy areas, over treacherous peaks and into deep ravines or wet marshes. We need adequate provisions to maintain us for the length of our journey. Maps help us choose our direction when paths cross. Flashlights illuminate our trail if we have not reached our goal by nightfall. In Colorado, just like in business, the weather can change in what seems like only a moment's notice. It's better to plan excessively and discover we did well, than not to plan enough and need to be rescued.

Wise planning is also important for your business, so you can keep one step ahead of the competition. Among your goals for 2008, you might want to convert a higher percentage of prospects into customers than you have in the past. You want more people to be aware of your products or services. They're out there; you'll find them and discover just what it is they want and decide how you can meet their need. You need to entice them with your most unique features.

Are you planning to take advantage of the greatest event to take place in Denver this year? Thousands of visitors will come to the Mile High City in August for the Democratic National Convention. It doesn't matter what political persuasions you have personally. Undoubtedly, the convention is a rare opportunity, and it could be a leg up for your business. Now is the time to design a unique message tailored specifically for this market. They need to be familiar with your brand before they arrive. Address their questions about your products and services in advance of the event. Reduce their doubts early, and make them comfortable with your company, so they'll be more apt to seek you out when they arrive.

May I partner with you in this year's adventure? Let me hike along beside you. Your business can go farther and faster if you let me carry part of the load.

Godspeed,
Gail
