A peach of a sale
Contributed by: Dan Hershberger on 8/18/2006

At 7 a.m. Aug. 12 a truck pulling a 48-foot trailer drove into the parking lot of the Arvada United Methodist Church at 68th Avenueand Carr Street. Waiting were Phil Smith, Arch Weaver and Randy Hardwick, of The Arvada Rotary Club. Randy hopped on the forklift and proceeded to unload 2,040 boxes of peaches from C & R Farms in Palisade. Harold Payte, of the Rotary Club, had brought his RV and set up tables on the side of it so people could pick up their pre-sold boxes of peaches.

Mike McHugh, a past president of Rotary, pasted down all of the names of those who had purchased peaches and he crossed them off as they picked up their juicy, ripe and tasty peaches. King and Micki Nelson also brought their RV and proceeded to set it up for those peaches that were not yet sold. Dennis Schwab, another past president of Rotary, was in charge of peaches that were not sold yet and were sold that day. Micki collected the money at $17per 10-pound box, while Randy gave out samples of sliced peaches to prospective customers who enjoyed them and became buying customers. As the peaches were sold, members of Arvada Rotary carried their customers' purchases and loaded them into their cars.

Mark Shelton, who is a past president of the La Veta, Colorado Rotary Club and the newest member of Arvada Rotary, was stationed near the entrance to the parking lot and helped wave customers to the available parking spaces while holding a "Peach Sale" sign.

It was a beautiful day, and all of The Arvada Rotary members came to help out. Also, many, many members of the Arvada community bought a little taste of Colorado.

At the end of the day, all of the peaches were sold and the Arvada Rotary Club raised nearly $10,000 for their community programs.

The club would like to thank the members of the Arvada community who bought peaches. You have not only made a purchase of wonderful fruit from right here in Colorado, but you have contributed to the service of your community.

Also, we would like to thank Arch Weaver and Phil Smith for spearheading this successful fundraiser.
