860 Miles and 150 Pairs of Shoes

Meiklejohn Elementary Mileage Club runners and Student Council members sponsored a successful shoe drive gathering 150 pairs of shoes for One World Running, an international non-profit based in Boulder, CO. Shoes will be cleaned by the charitable organization and sent to African and Central American countries in an effort to encourage active healthy lifestyles in developing nations. Donated shoes that are not useable for physical fitness will be sent to Nike headquarters in Beaverton, OR for the eco-cycle program which turns shoes into running tracks to benefits low-income areas in the U.S.
The Meiklejohn Elementary Mileage Club, facilitated by parent-volunteers Karen Hagin and Janeen Haller-Abernethy, has been meeting twice per week since October 2006. Mileage Club participants accumulate miles and rewards by running or walking around Beeman Park during school recess times. The club encourages student fitness while giving kids an alternative playground activity. To date, Pre-K through 6th grade participants have run over 860 miles.
