A day in the life ... Hope House
Contributed by: Gladys Mercier on 2/5/2008

Editor's note: Visit our Faces of Arvada and Wheat Ridge page, where YourHub.com staff and readers can introduce you to more people who make this part of the metro area what it is.

Hope House in Arvada is indeed a house of hope for teen moms who are parenting one or more children. The young moms would have a hard time keeping their children and being able to get an education without the help of the people who run this lovely place.

Lisa Steven is the executive director. Amie Walton is the program director.
Amie was kind enough to give me a tour of the house today so I could get an idea of what life is like there. I could feel the love the staff has for the moms and kids.

The rooms are decorated very nicely. The whole house has a warm feeling and the staff is cheerful and kind. The play rooms are wonderful.

There are six moms currently living at Hope House and nine children from newborn to 3 years old. The moms are able to pursue an education while their children are cared for at Hope House. Many Hope House moms have been a victim of physical, emotional or sexual abuse.

The moms and kids can stay for two and a half years. Two moms are taking college courses and four of the moms are either working on their G.E.D. or have completed it.

Hope House is different from a maternity home, they are unique in offering a comprehensive, holistic and long-term self-sufficiency program in a home environment. They are staffed 24 hours a day and provide intensive case management, focusing on each resident as a whole person, evaluating each need and helping the moms to meet those needs.

Hope House is a nondenominational Christian ministry that believes in showing the moms how much God loves and values them. They do not receive any state or federal funding, it is a 501(c)(3) organization and all donations are tax deductible.

How can you help?

Financially, to create a healthy generation of young children. Become a volunteer. They have some but always need more help. Come take a tour. They would love to share the Hope House program with you.

I am impressed with both Lisa and Amie. They do make a difference in the young moms' lives.

That certainly is an important face of our community that not many people see very often.
