Funnyman Meddles tells it like it is

Arvada comedian Bob Meddles doesn't waste any time. The 49-year-old stand-up got into the game only two years ago, but has already made a career of touring and performing.

"I actually got my start from a friend of mine who was in a comedy class," Meddles said. "He knew I'd written humor columns in the past, so he asked me to help him write some jokes. He kept saying, 'you should do this, Bob. You're funnier than I am.'"

Getting started came easy for Meddles, who had his writing experience to fall back on.

"I'm kind of a solo writer," he said. "There's a school of thought that says the best thing you can do is work with somebody else because it gives you a chance to bounce material off them. I don't play well with others -- I think it's because of my background as a reporter. Writing's not a collaborative thing. You sit down, do it and that's it."

By the time he took the risk of getting on stage, all that work in private paid off.

"I did it once and I was hooked," he said.

Meddles' material is mostly observational.

"I'm a fat, balding, middle-aged white guy and I have all the perspectives of a fat, balding, middle-aged white guy," he said. "I think I probably have a different perspective because of my start. I'll be 50 years old this year, so I've got a whole lifetime to draw upon. And that's what my comedy is about."

The observational tack has done well for Meddles. He credits his "Slap Stupid People Campaign" for defining his style.

"It's just everyday irritation you have with people who annoy you for no good reason," he said. "The woman in the 10-items-or-less line at the grocery store with 30 items but thinks it's okay because she's going to split the ticket three ways -- that's the one who was in sixth grade math saying 'when am I going to use this?' Right now. The guy who has a big 4x4, lifts it up an extra 10 inches but still comes to a full stop at a 3-inch speed bump. What did you buy that for?"

It's an approach that's left him with no shortage of material. Meddles says he tries to write every day, and has at least three serious days of writing every week. "It's kind of therapeutic," he admitted.
