An open audition was made by sixth grade teacher Carine Lockwood to cast roles in the Shakespeare play "A Mid Summer Night's Dream." The response was astronomical! Sixty of the 87 sixth grade students enrolled at Van Arsdale Elementary School applied to act in the play!
The astounding enthusiasm warranted a double casting of the play. Students took their roles seriously and were dilligent about rehearsing even during recess and showed up on non contact days to practice their roles. Some even took additional dance classes before school to ensure that their performances were flawless.
Mrs. Lockwood's sister, Natalie Pangburn, was instrumental in assisting with coaching the eager actors to perfect their inspiring dialogues. Backdrops were painted to reflect Greek times. Whimsical costumes, floral arrangements and decorated walking sticks completed the ensemble. The students added a surprising twist by creating a stomp dance put to upbeat music.
The culmination of memorized lines, expressions and dance moves will be put to the test on Friday, May 9th when the students perform in Denver as part of the 24th annual Shakespeare Festival. A repeat performance will be at Ralston Valley High School on May 15th at 7 pm. Admission is free, so don't miss the opportunity to view these fine actors in action!
