When Jim Dean, General Manager of Woody's Wood-fired Pizza learned that the need for emergency food assistance increases during the summer months, he started to think. Thinking led to action - which is resulting in a weekend-long fundraiser to benefit the Arvada Community Food Bank kicking off Friday, July 25 th with a patio barbeque, Santa Dunk Tank and Fruit Cake Toss.
"No one should have to go without a meal during the holidays or anytime during the year. Since it's halfway to Christmas, we felt it was a great time to do something for a community charity that probably gets overlooked this time of year and that's why we choose the Arvada Community Food Bank. We've put together a 'Christmas in July' theme for the fundraiser and hope to raise at least $1,000".
The fundraiser could not come at a better time for the Food Bank which is seeing a spike in demand for services with the downturn in the economy. "Most alarming to me is the number of people who are coming in HUNGRY - that haven't eaten for days", says Kathy Underhill, Executive Director of the Food Bank. "We received a donation of hams last week and have had mothers break down into tears when we give them out telling us they can feed their children for two weeks".
Woody's will be donating 10% of all food sales over the weekend, plus what is collected in food and cash donations. To put a perspective on the impact this fundraiser could have on hungry neighbors, Ms. Underhill explains, "We can purchase five boxes of cereal for $1; if Woody's and its customers can raise $1,000 that means 5,000 boxes of cereal to feed those in need! I hope Your Hub readers eat lots of pizza to help alleviate hunger."
