Finding connection October 18
Contributed by: Marcia Canter on 10/10/2008

Looking to connect to something other than the news from Wall Street and the political trail? Need to revitalize your spirit without hurting your bank account? On Saturday, October 18, Arvada United Methodist Church will provide you the chance to renew your spirit and connect to spirituality in a different way than sitting in a pew.

A Day of Connection will be an opportunity for Methodists and nonMethodists, Christian and nonChristians to experience connecting with themselves, others and their God. There will be a variety of classes ranging from Masculine Spirituality to T'ai Chi to Chinese Brush Art. Attendees will have the chance to reflect individually as well as in groups.

Sessions include the following:

A Taste of Meditation-What exactly is meditation, what is mindfulness? Lisa Lowe, a licensed acupuncturist, sees the suffering that stress and dis-connection cause. Meditation, mindfulness and prayer, can help heal. She will discuss the Buddhist Asian Roots of Meditation and the Christian roots of contemplative and centering prayer.

Connecting with the Energy that Surrounds Us-- Energy work is a means of connecting to the healing energies of the universe. There are many different types of energy work. Bob O'Connell, the facilitator, has explored Reiki, Healing Touch, EFT and Donna Eden's energy medicine. In this class he will introduce basic concepts of energy work and create opportunities to connect with these energies. He is a Reiki master and has worked with cancer patients for three years through the LifeSpark Cancer Resources organization.

8 Ways-T'Ai Chi --Erik Gasner, a graduate of Naropa University's Interdisciplinary Studies Department, is pioneering a unique and integrative approach to preventative physical wellness and holistic health. His ultimate goal is to help people feel healthy, happy and at home in their own skin. He will be teaching the "8 Ways", a derivative of T'ai Chi Chuan. The "8 Ways" is a simplified T'ai Chi movement form which is easy to learn, easy to do, and provides gentle exercise for increasing energy (chi), flexibility balance, and body-mind health. Participants in this session will work on connecting to their bodies, the earth, and one another through imagery, energy, and movement.

The Flow of The Brush/An Introduction to Chinese Brush Painting-In this hands-on-workshop, the history aesthetics and meditative principles of this beautiful art form will be introduced. Victoria Kwainski has more than 20 years of experience as a professional artist. Supplies will be provided.

Drumming---Feel the spirit through your hands and the drum. Eric Baumheier has been playing drums for about 12 years and has been influenced by African Afro-Caribbean and Middle-Eastern traditions. Bring your own drum if you have one.

Women's Spirituality/Masculine Spirituality-Rev. Bonnie Benda and Rev. Bill Kirton will lead these two sessions on how the genders make the spiritual connections differently.

The day will begin at 8:30 a.m. with registration and a continental breakfast. Moments of communal silence and music will be throughout the day. A lunch is included and childcare is available. Activities will conclude at about 3:00 p.m. Participants can walk the church labyrinth at the close of the day.

Cost for the retreat is $30 per individual and $40 per couple, if registered by October 19. Cost is $10 higher the day of the event. For more information or to register, go to www.arvadaumc.org or call 303-421-5135.
